Time warp is a term used freely, but completely justified with this collectable unique vehicle

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

La Grande Bug was one of the first Super Beetles to have electronic fuel injection fitted as standard enabling wonderfully smooth performance and 33mpg. Due to the low miles covered it would be advisable to re-commission the vehicle despite the mechanical wellbeing if the new owner plans to put the car into regular use.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
4.5J Lemmertz sport GT wheels are as new and show all the VW stampings which are crystal clear along with factory fitted wheel weights. All tyres are incredibly still the first Goodyear tubeless bias ply type in perfect order. Dual circuit drums front and rear will require an overhaul if regular use is intended.

HISTORY FILE
The story of this example begins in the Williams VW Dealership, Lancing, Michigan in the USA when proprietor, Mr Williams, took delivery of this limited edition La Grande Bug. Realising that this was something very special with amenities not customarily found in a Bug it was held back from sale to keep for his children to use when they went off to college. However, VW introduced newer models with better safety features so a Golf was the chosen mode of transport. Mr Williams kept the vehicle in one of his VW Showrooms all the way up until retirement in 2010 when a renowned UK VW collector, Mr Willcock, found out about it. Knowing that a 242-mile 1970’s VW Beetle is not something that comes up for sale too often, especially not one that is a limited edition like this, he jumped on it! Last sold by KGF Classic Cars in July 2014 we are delighted to offer this vehicle to market again.

A collection of magazine features, coveted Meguiars trophy from the Classic Motor Show appearance, and all importation/duty paid paperwork are included. The vehicle has never been registered. Original literature including handbooks and sales brochures are included.

Recent work carried out in 2016 includes a major service and new carburettor. The previous keeper, Mr Holmes, a member of the Ford Cortina Owners Club and huge classic car enthusiast sold the Cortina to KGF Classic Cars early in 2017 after purchasing our Rover Montego 1.6LX. Mr Holmes even kept a maintenance log for the car! All original handbooks, operating guides and the Ford Accessories booklet remain with the car. The interior of this Laguna is spotlessly clean and in excellent order. The original sports seats in ‘Jarama’ Velour, (Code LJ), are unique to the model and manage to be supremely comfortable yet supportive with firm bolsters. The dashboard and associated switches, controls and functions all look, feel and operate as new. All gauges and instruments operate perfectly and show heathy readings, including the dual purpose oil level and coolant temperature gauge which illuminates to read oil level for 30 seconds after starting, before reverting to read the coolant temperature. The original Blaupunkt 60-watt hi-fi remains fitted and fully operational, and even the supplying dealer tax disc holder is still fitted! A sumptuous and spacious interior with super soft furnishings, typically French and ready to transport you back to a 1996 Renault showroom!

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
A lively and sporting 1948cc 16v fuel injected engine develops 140bhp at 6000rpm and 182Nm torque at 4500rpm. 0-62 is dispatched in a respectable 9.8 seconds and top speed is 127mph. Fastidious upkeep by the one and only owner, a keen Renault enthusiast, has ensured optimal mechanical condition and a superb driving performance. The clean engine bay displays factory panel stamps, identity plates and stickers as well as a cambelt change sticker. A cambelt change has been carried out and full quality exhaust system in 2016 at a cost of £428 will offer further peace of mind. The five speed manual gearbox operates exactly as it should and the clutch is light and positive.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The factory fitted steel rims remain fitted with the original Seville wheel trims which are in virtually unmarked condition and completely intact. Brand new premium quality Bridgestone Turanza 195/60 R15 tyres were fitted in 2015, virtually unworn and are another hint towards the no expense spared mentality towards vehicle upkeep. The spare wheel with unused Michelin tyre is housed in the spotless boot area with factory paint codes still attached. ABS Anti-lock brakes perform very well and offer assured stopping power.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 29th March 1996 by supplying Renault Main Dealer Evans Halshaw of Warwick, the first and only ever keeper is a Mr Peter Reed. A keen follower of Motorsport and avid supporter of the Renault Laguna British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) team, Mr Reed ordered this 2.0S RTi 16v example for its mid-range sporting credentials and even kept the original sales brochure. The car was his pride and joy which is obvious in the cars condition, driving manner and history. Having made the difficult decision to give up driving on health grounds, the next lucky owner is certain to benefit from 21 years of devoted care for his pride and joy. The excellent history file includes the original black leather wallet housing the stamped service book as well as all handbooks, guides and point of sale literature, even down to the dealership staff business cards! A beautifully presented history folder contains service and maintenance invoices dating from the first service in 1997 to the new exhaust system in 2016, and incudes a documented cambelt change at 37,000 miles. The very low mileage of 45,107 is fully verified and previous MOTs have been kept, as well as both original Renault keys with working fobs and the original blue V5 document. A very rare surviving example of an often neglected Renault Laguna, a dare to be different modern classic and an absolute credit to the one and only keeper.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Five factory original 13” six spoke alloy wheels are perfectly preserved with no markings whatsoever and the correct badged centre caps remain in situe.  The four road wheels and spare fifth alloy are shod in the original Dunlop SP9 155/65 R13 tyres which are in excellent order with plenty of tread remaining.  The original jack and toolkit are complete and housed in the spotless boot floor.  The dual circuit servo assisted brakes with 9.4” front discs and 7.0” rear drums bring the car up to a steady, straight and assured halt.

HISTORY FILE
This wonderful example was registered new on 26th February 1998 by Rover Main Dealer Central Garages of Torbay as a demonstrator vehicle until being sold to first private keeper Mrs Isabella Shaw on 22nd July 1998.  Mrs Shaw kept the vehicle in very sparing use for over ten years until July 2009 whereby the car has had just two further keepers.  The previous keeper Mr Lovett an avid car collector revelled in the incredible low mileage nature of this example but has now begun to thin out his collection due to advancing years.

The history file consists of many service and maintenance invoices from Central Garage Staplehurst which along with previous MOT certificates support the amazing low mileage of 7,748.  An original Rover 100 Series sales brochure completes the history file.
