Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

The Holy Grail, a Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth with only 40,057 miles

MODEL HISTORY
The Sierra RS Cosworth project was defined in the spring of 1983 by the then recently appointed head of Ford Motorsport in Europe. It was established that at the time, Ford was no longer competitive in this area. After receiving full support from Ford Public Relations, the project was underway with the Sierra chosen as the basis for the project. Ford Motorsport in Europe approached the automotive company Cosworth who answered positively, but put up two conditions: The street version of the car had to produce no less than 204 HP, and Ford had to accept no less than 15,000 engines. Few cars have ever been greeted with such enthusiasm as the original Sierra RS Cosworth, perhaps only the exclusive 500 cars that were developed to become an evolution edition, unbeatable on the track. Aston Martin at Tickford were assigned with converting the 500 cars, which in 1987 were to be announced as the RS500. Engineering differences aside, largely the cars were aesthetically similar to the standard Cosworth. The main differences being the additional boot mounted spoiler, discrete badges and the revised front bumper to aid improved cooling. This included the removal of the front fog lamps as standard, but with the dealerships offering reinstatement as an optional extra.

EQUIPMENT
Bodyside mouldings, integral front air dam, colour coded door mirrors, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, colour coded lockable fuel filler cap, bonnet cooling vents, halogen headlamps, colour coded bumpers, single plane rear wing spoiler with trailing edge fence, lower tailgate mounted spoiler, tinted glass all round, tailgate wash/wipe, laminated windscreen, central locking, extended centre console, cigar lighter, quartz digital clock, fascia light dimmer, leather gearknob, leather three spoke sports steering wheel, 3-speed heater fan , cassette storage, electronic sound system (model ECU2) with power amplifier, electric aerial, Recaro Sports front seats, split folding rear seats, tilt and slide sunroof, tachometer with turbo boost gauge, trip recorder, anti-locking brake system with failure warning light, electric front windows. Dealer options; Ford floor mats.

EXTERIOR
Presented in above average condition, this RS500 Cosworth has remained true to Fords vision finished optional Ford Black (code A6). The paintwork boasts a polished, uniform finish but it is not all factory original. All exterior trim, rubbers and glass are in good order and the imperative RS500 badges and decals are present. A small crack to the plastic front window vent and o/s front indicator lens is visible. The front lower splitter has remained true to shape and the original grilles in place of the fog lamps remain correct to the RS500 build specification. The ‘Go Perrys’ Ford number plates are still fitted front and rear. The ultimate 1980’s performance touring car, very special.

INTERIOR
The interior of this very rare RS500 remains trimmed in the original Ford Roma Grey (code S2) upholstery featuring Recaro front seats and matching carpeted door trim. The fabric seats coverings are in excellent condition with only slightly loose material to the drivers bolster and seat base. The carpets are clean and free from wear having been protected from new by genuine Ford carpet mats. The drivers door rubber has a slight cut. All dials and gauges operate perfectly including all electric warning lamps and the door open/bulb blown warning display. The dashboard displays cracks around the dash top speaker grille where an alarm sensor has been fitted and the headlining to the rear has dropped slightly. A clean boot area houses the original uncut parcel shelf with correct rubber hangers, now impossible to source.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The original RS Cosworth powerplant warrants little introduction. Fitted with the standard 2.0 Dual Over Head Cam (DOHC) with the larger Garrett AiResearch T31/T04 turbocharger and intercooler, the motorsport pedigree of this car is unmistakable. With an impressive output of 224HP allowing the car to accelerate smoothly through 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and achieve a top speed of 153mph. The engine bay is original but does show age deterioration and a stainless steel exhaust system is fitted. The gear changes are positive and direct throughout the range, a real delight.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The factory fitted 15 X 7 inch RS Sierra Cosworth alloy wheels housed within the flared arches are in pristine condition, and are shod in matching Yokohama 205/50 R15 tyres all round with excellent tread remaining. The original Dunlop D40 tyre on the spare wheel remains in situ. Diagonally split hydraulic circuits, anti-lock braking assisted 28.3cm ventilated discs up front and 27.3cm discs at the rear bring the car to a sure and steady halt.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on the 27th August 1987, build number 284 of 500 has covered just 40,057 miles from new in the hands of one keeper since 1989, Mr Marshall. All-bar the first owner Mr Gray for two years, Mr Marshall and his companies have owned the car which is confirmed in writing by him and by service documentation. Registered new on the 19th March 1975 this Mk1 Escort would have been one of the final cars off the production line and has had just two private owners from new before being part exchanged in March 1991 to Ford main agents, Tim Norton in Oakham.  Mr Norton himself was so impressed with the condition that he kept the car in his own private collection and remained the cars custodian to the present day!  Not content with some minor blemishes when first acquiring the car he commissioned his own team of trained Ford personnel to work on the vehicle and make it a show piece for events and promotions.  Quite literally a time capsule from the seventies and now available to a lucky individual.

Luxury and opulence in abundance, a cabin space that was, and in many ways still is, hugely ahead of its time.  Features such as electrically automatic seat belt feeders and an asymmetrically positioned glove compartment lock hint towards the ‘over engineering’ of the Mercedes-Benz W124.  The anatomically contoured wedge shape seats finished in optional Mushroom leather (code 265) show minimal markings namely to the driver’s bolster and are immensely comfortable.  The pristine carpets have been protected from new by Mercedes tailored floor mats and even the original first aid kit is complete and housed in the rear shelf compartment along with the dealer tax disc holder still affixed to the front screen!  The burr walnut, standard only in this range topping 300CE-24, is in remarkable order along with all other high quality materials.  The boot area houses the original spare wheel, toolkit and jack and displays factory build stickers.  An outstanding classic Mercedes-Benz interior, the epitome of the maker’s reputation for engineering prowess.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
A beautifully clean and original engine bay displays all the factory stickers and plates and houses the powerful six-cylinder engine with four-valve technology.  The electronically controlled inlet camshaft adjustment contributes towards the high output and excellent torque.  A top speed of 145mph and 0-60mph in 7.7 seconds are quoted from the 220bhp engine.  Fitted with the optional and desirable 5-speed automatic gearbox making it possible to adopt a dynamic driving style. Wonderful.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Optional eight hole light alloy wheels in fantastic order and free from scuffs are shod in quality matching Michelin Energy 205/60 R15 tyres with excellent tread remaining.  The dual-circuit power-assisted braking system with anti-lock offers stopping power to install complete peace of mind.

HISTORY FILE
The history file of this example is nothing short of incredible.  Full Mercedes-Benz Main Dealer and Mercedes-Benz Specialist service history is evident throughout the entire life of this pampered example.  With 25 service stamps and accompanying invoices this enthusiast owned car offers the next owner an insight into the fastidious care bestowed upon it. A collection of MOT certificates, old tax discs and even a new car sales brochure all make fascinating reading.  Two sets of keys, the metal key tag and an unopened recovery key all remain attached to a Mercedes leather key fob.  A truely remarkable, usable and stylish coupe.

The interior of this remarkable example is in spotless factory fresh condition and exactly as Ford intended.  The Rainbow cloth trim is beautifully clean and the common vulnerable areas for wear such as the seat bases and bolsters are as new.  The colour-keyed velour carpet is clean and full having been protected from new by Ford rubber over mats and the unique perforated grey headlining is perfect.  All switchgear is functional and intact, and the soft finish dashboard undamaged.  An orange alarm light has been fitted to a switch blanking plate, easily replaced.  Labels, boot stickers and Ford tags remain attached.  The gear knob and small diameter steering wheel are squeaky clean with veins clearly visible and the supplying dealer tax disc holder is present.  The header mounted digital clock retains the correct grey LCD display and the original Ford radio/cassette (model RST21P) remains in place.  The hugely difficult to source original trimmed parcel shelf is intact, straight and complete with the correct rubber hangers.  Devine.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The potent free-revving 1597cc OHC engine develops a lively 96bhp at 6000rpm which in such a lightweight car enables 0-60mph in 8.7secs and a top speed of 112mph.  The smooth five speed synchromesh gearbox with remote shift is light and exact, a joy to use and that unmistakable exhaust note makes this car truly addictive!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Five Special ‘pepperpot’ 13” X 6” alloy wheels have never been refurbished still showing clear definition to factory stampings and very light marks to the outermost rims are barely noticeable.  Still shod in the original factory issued Pirelli P600 185/60 R13 tyres to all five alloys it is advised these are replaced if the car is to be used regularly.  The dual line servo assisted brakes with fade fighting ventilated 9.4” front discs and 7.0” rear drums would benefit from use but are MOT compliant.
