Factory options; Tinted glass, tilt/slide sunroof, rear seatbelts, RST21P radio cassette.

EXTERIOR
Introduced in September 1981, Ford intended on making just 5,000 RS1600i’s for homologation requirements, but the car sold so well that 8,659 cars were in fact built with just 2,000 for the UK market. The exterior of this example is finished in Ford Strato Silver (code V6), the equal rarest of colours along with Graphite Grey, only 250 of each being produced. (Source; RS Owners Club). The metallic paintwork has a striking uniform and polished finish, complimented by the correct RS1600i decals on the bonnet, boot lid and sides. The sunroof has minor outer edge discoloration and the driving and fog lamps have been changed for Ford items. The original rear spoiler is perfectly straight with no distortion issues and the front spoiler displays clearly the Motorsport logo and part number. All further exterior trim sections are in excellent order and the tinted glass is number plate etched. A superb and now very rare example of the first front wheel drive Ford ever to wear the RS badge!

INTERIOR
The interior of this RS1600i is in truly fantastic order. Finished in Shark Grey Crushed Velour (trim code TC), the seats and deep side bolsters have retained all structural integrity and the matching door cards and perforated headlining are in pristine condition. The gear changes are light and exact, a pleasure to operate.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 15 X 6 inch RS seven spoke alloy wheels are unmarked and correct to the RS1600i model having only one spoke on each wheel stamped with the Ford emblem as opposed to the more common RS Turbo fitments with three stamped spokes. The wheels are shod with matching quality 195/50/R15 Uniroyal tyres all round and amazingly the spare is still a Dunlop D40 item as fitted new. Diagonally split hydraulic circuits with tandem master cylinder, vacuum servo assistance and 9.4” ventilated discs up front bring the car to a halt but far short of modern standards.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 23rd August 1983, this cherished example has covered just 68,847 miles from new. Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

The Holy Grail, a Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth with only 40,057 miles

MODEL HISTORY
The Sierra RS Cosworth project was defined in the spring of 1983 by the then recently appointed head of Ford Motorsport in Europe. It was established that at the time, Ford was no longer competitive in this area. After receiving full support from Ford Public Relations, the project was underway with the Sierra chosen as the basis for the project. Ford Motorsport in Europe approached the automotive company Cosworth who answered positively, but put up two conditions: The street version of the car had to produce no less than 204 HP, and Ford had to accept no less than 15,000 engines. Few cars have ever been greeted with such enthusiasm as the original Sierra RS Cosworth, perhaps only the exclusive 500 cars that were developed to become an evolution edition, unbeatable on the track. Aston Martin at Tickford were assigned with converting the 500 cars, which in 1987 were to be announced as the RS500. Engineering differences aside, largely the cars were aesthetically similar to the standard Cosworth. The main differences being the additional boot mounted spoiler, discrete badges and the revised front bumper to aid improved cooling. This included the removal of the front fog lamps as standard, but with the dealerships offering reinstatement as an optional extra.

EQUIPMENT
Bodyside mouldings, integral front air dam, colour coded door mirrors, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, colour coded lockable fuel filler cap, bonnet cooling vents, halogen headlamps, colour coded bumpers, single plane rear wing spoiler with trailing edge fence, lower tailgate mounted spoiler, tinted glass all round, tailgate wash/wipe, laminated windscreen, central locking, extended centre console, cigar lighter, quartz digital clock, fascia light dimmer, leather gearknob, leather three spoke sports steering wheel, 3-speed heater fan , cassette storage, electronic sound system (model ECU2) with power amplifier, electric aerial, Recaro Sports front seats, split folding rear seats, tilt and slide sunroof, tachometer with turbo boost gauge, trip recorder, anti-locking brake system with failure warning light, electric front windows. The paintwork boasts a polished, uniform finish but it is not all factory original. All exterior trim, rubbers and glass are in good order and the imperative RS500 badges and decals are present. A small crack to the plastic front window vent and o/s front indicator lens is visible. The front lower splitter has remained true to shape and the original grilles in place of the fog lamps remain correct to the RS500 build specification. The ‘Go Perrys’ Ford number plates are still fitted front and rear. The ultimate 1980’s performance touring car, very special.

The dashboard displays cracks around the dash top speaker grille where an alarm sensor has been fitted and the headlining to the rear has dropped slightly. A clean boot area houses the original uncut parcel shelf with correct rubber hangers, now impossible to source.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The original RS Cosworth powerplant warrants little introduction. Fitted with the standard 2.0 Dual Over Head Cam (DOHC) with the larger Garrett AiResearch T31/T04 turbocharger and intercooler, the motorsport pedigree of this car is unmistakable. With an impressive output of 224HP allowing the car to accelerate smoothly through 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and achieve a top speed of 153mph.
