Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

A Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth with 9,180 miles and the same owner from new.

MODEL HISTORY
Five hundred extra special examples of the 150 mph Ford Sierra RS Cosworth went on sale in Britain on the 1st August 1987. This more powerful ‘evolution’ model was introduced to allow Ford to develop the original limited production run of 5,000 needed to allow the car to be homologated for International Touring Car Racing in Group A. Aston Martin at Tickford were assigned with converting the 500 cars and in addition to the more powerful 224bhp YBD engine, (with the potential to exceed 400bhp in race trim), numerous aerodynamic features were incorporated in the bodywork. These include a 30mm lip spoiler applied directly to the rear edge of the tailgate to increase rear downforce. New and larger cooling ducts were included in the design of the front bumper for the intercooler and the front brakes, as well as an aerodynamic splitter. Ford’s intention was for every RS500 to be finished in Black but limited stock of the regular Cosworths resulted in 56 Diamond White and 52 Moonstone Blue being converted. The unique silver coachline and RS500 decals are present and original as are dealer supplied front and rear number plates. Date stampings are visible on key areas such as the inner wings, slam panel and tailgate but more remarkable are delicate stickers and PDI labels still attached in the wheel arches. HISTORY FILE
It is difficult to convey the amount and how comprehensive the history file is for this Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth build number 404/500. Built December 1986 at the Genk assembly plant in Germany to arrive at the Ford appointed Aston Martin Tickford factory on the 23rd July 1987. Works completed and signed off, the vehicle was dispatched on the 5th August to Stormont Ford Merseyside Limited to be supplied to its one and only custodian, Mr McIntosh. The original Telex order sent by Mr McIntosh along with purchase correspondence from Stormont Ford confirms the purchase by himself for the vehicle to be registered on the 25th August 1987 to his company, Church & Bramhall Sections Ltd. Upon retirement in August 2002 the vehicle was registered to him personally.

The new vehicle sales invoice reveals a price paid of £20,249.55 with a subsequent invoice for £332.48 for a Ford remote alarm, (now removed and replaced by a Thatcham Category 1 Toad alarm in 2011). Subsequently and without any doubt, Mr McIntosh was a fastidious owner retaining every document from Ford recall letters to regular service invoices and MOT certificates. This record keeping even extends to neatly filing every insurance cover note, tax disc and SORN letter. The history file not only confirms his care and upkeep for this pampered car but also his dedication for the RS brand by keeping annual RS Owner Club Membership letters and reaching milestone certificates and memorabilia for continual membership. Not one for public displays or shows, the vehicle was rarely seen out of his property but is obviously known and registered with the RS Owners Club. Such was his protection for the vehicle that when a house renovation commenced in 2022 and in fear of it being seen or worst still, damaged, he placed the car in secure temperature controlled storage locally. With the ongoing rise in values and public interest combined with poor health the very difficult decision was made to sell the vehicle and upon purchasing, KGF Classic Cars embarked on the Specialist Cosworth services of Harvey Gibbs at Supreme Car Services. A major service and cambelt change along with all fluids have been changed making the car A1 mechanically and ready for immediate enjoyment should the next lucky owner wish.

HISTORY FILE
Manufactured in June 1983 and supplied new on the 1st August by Ford Main Dealer, Busseys of Norwich to Mr Dennis Vaughan. The car has had just two registered keepers in total with ownership passing to his son, Allen Vaughan, of same address in 2019. The history file is amazing with a huge file of paperwork spanning the entire life of the car and starting with the original purchase documentation. The vehicle order form and sales invoice are made out to the first owner and confirm the price paid of £6,222.89 less part exchange allowance of £1,922.89 for his 1979 Ford Cortina MK4 2.0S, clearly a Ford fan! The incredible history file includes the PDI checklist from the supplying dealer and receipts for accessories such as the headlamp guards and rear blinds. Even the cold start guide, recall letters and tax discs dating back to the very first issue in 1983 have been kept. The folder continues with a huge file of service receipts and invoices dating back to the first service in 1984 as well as comprehensive MOT records to warrant the 27,013 miles. All handbooks, guides, service book and spare keys are present. In April 2024 a major service was carried out with all fluids changed as well as a cambelt and water pump replacement and full brake overhaul. The car is in prime working order to make sure it drives as good as it looks and is ready for the show circuit!

Keen Impreza fans may spot unique Spec C features such as the roof vent, absence of side sills and front spoilers but only the knowledgeable will appreciate the lightweight factory panels fitted to save a total of 90kg. Fewer still will understand the efforts made to this homologation special improving chassis performance and body rigidity. A stunning gleaming shine is evidenced throughout thanks to a low 15,298 miles and temperature controlled storage. The large bonnet scoop and expensive optional rear carbon boot spoiler offer visually striking features but importantly are designed to improve performance and downforce. The aluminium bonnet and front bumper have a few stone chips. With a total production of just 173 Blue Spec C Limited Editions, (Source: type-ra.com), this prime example is worthy of continued preservation.

INTERIOR
The removal of many luxury features on the rare Spec C models was key to the weight saving measures, the Limited adds a few back such as electric windows with thinner glass and manual air conditioning. The focus of this rally-honed interior is purely on a thrilling drive and a radio, sun visor mirrors, rear wiper or even remote boot release are replaced with a far more exciting Driver Controlled Centre Differential DCCD and auto water spray buttons! Factory standard in all respects, all control and gauges function correctly. Lifting the boot lid reveals a sparse trunk area with unfastened side panelling and boot carpet fitted as an accessory as it was not included in Spec C examples. Also in the boot is the large 12L STi water tank to spray the intercooler on long performance runs and also to aid weight distribution rather than a smaller tank being located under the bonnet. The original space saver spare wheel and Subaru tool pouch is present.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The jewel in the crown in this Subaru is the Horizontally-Opposed EJ207 2.0 litre turbocharged engine. With a raft of factory fitted upgrades including a VF36 ball bearing titanium twin scroll turbocharger and semi-closed deck engine, this unit produces a stated 280PS. The reality is more like 300PS but due to Japan’s car industry having a Gentleman’s Agreement or jishu-kisei on power outputs, this was never documented in literature. Opening the lightweight aluminium bonnet reveals the STI branded turbo intercooler in a very clean engine bay with all factory plates, label and stickers intact and Subaru stampings to the inner wings. The short-throw 6-speed gearbox is sweet moving up and down the gears with precision making the most of the free-revving Subaru Boxer engine.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Unique and gorgeous lightweight forged 17×7.5” Gold BBS alloy wheels are in superb order other a few very light markings barely detectable.
