Original badges and model designation are in excellent condition and the supplying Ford Main Dealer number plates and tax disc holder remain with even the very first 1983 disc still in situ! The car has had just two registered keepers in total with ownership passing to his son, Allen Vaughan, of same address in 2019. The history file is amazing with a huge file of paperwork spanning the entire life of the car and starting with the original purchase documentation. The vehicle order form and sales invoice are made out to the first owner and confirm the price paid of £6,222.89 less part exchange allowance of £1,922.89 for his 1979 Ford Cortina MK4 2.0S, clearly a Ford fan! EXTERIOR
The WRX STi Spec C styling is subtly different but still an instantly recognisable rally legend finished in iconic World Rally Blue Mica, (Code 02C). Keen Impreza fans may spot unique Spec C features such as the roof vent, absence of side sills and front spoilers but only the knowledgeable will appreciate the lightweight factory panels fitted to save a total of 90kg. Fewer still will understand the efforts made to this homologation special improving chassis performance and body rigidity. A stunning gleaming shine is evidenced throughout thanks to a low 15,298 miles and temperature controlled storage. The large bonnet scoop and expensive optional rear carbon boot spoiler offer visually striking features but importantly are designed to improve performance and downforce. The aluminium bonnet and front bumper have a few stone chips. With a total production of just 173 Blue Spec C Limited Editions, (Source: type-ra.com), this prime example is worthy of continued preservation.

INTERIOR
The removal of many luxury features on the rare Spec C models was key to the weight saving measures, the Limited adds a few back such as electric windows with thinner glass and manual air conditioning. The focus of this rally-honed interior is purely on a thrilling drive and a radio, sun visor mirrors, rear wiper or even remote boot release are replaced with a far more exciting Driver Controlled Centre Differential DCCD and auto water spray buttons! Lifting the boot lid reveals a sparse trunk area with unfastened side panelling and boot carpet fitted as an accessory as it was not included in Spec C examples. Also in the boot is the large 12L STi water tank to spray the intercooler on long performance runs and also to aid weight distribution rather than a smaller tank being located under the bonnet. The original space saver spare wheel and Subaru tool pouch is present.

With a raft of factory fitted upgrades including a VF36 ball bearing titanium twin scroll turbocharger and semi-closed deck engine, this unit produces a stated 280PS. The reality is more like 300PS but due to Japan’s car industry having a Gentleman’s Agreement or jishu-kisei on power outputs, this was never documented in literature. Opening the lightweight aluminium bonnet reveals the STI branded turbo intercooler in a very clean engine bay with all factory plates, label and stickers intact and Subaru stampings to the inner wings. The short-throw 6-speed gearbox is sweet moving up and down the gears with precision making the most of the free-revving Subaru Boxer engine.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

All original handbooks and a fully stamped service book are present including all service invoices and documented cambelt changes. The excellent console layout and clear instrumentation is all operational and there is no damage, cracks or lift to the colour-keyed facia. The moulded headlining is perfect as are the wood veneered inserts with no UV fading thanks to careful garage storage from new. HISTORY FILE
What an amazing history. Registered by the Rover Group, Company Vehicle Sales, Canley Road, Coventry on the 27th May 1993. A national advert in the Daily Express from the Hartwell Group was spotted by Mr David Geere for Montego 2.0 LXi’s for £7999, the press cutting is included in the history file. Mr Geere is a big fan of the Montego and wanted to replace his 1986 2.0 HL that had covered 60,000 miles at the time. Knowing that Montego production was soon to end, he called the garage and spoke to the Car Sales Representative, Ted Noble, and posted a £100 cheque deposit along with a type written letter to secure a duo-tone Flame Red example with 24 miles from new. A copy of this letter is also included in the history file. This pre-registered example was transferred to Mr Geere on the 9th October 1993 and he has remained the only owner since! After collection he continued to use his ‘old’ Montego expecting it to go wrong, but it never did! As the years rolled by his ‘new’ Montego was rarely needed and became a relic used only for shows and national events and such is his dedication for the marque, he still owns the 1986 2.0 HL intended to be replaced which instead frequents the show circuit alongside this perfect example!

Included in the history file is all the original dealer correspondence including the new vehicle purchase invoice, previous MOT certificates and invoices, all handbooks, manuals and two keys with dealer fobs. In March 2024 the vehicle had a major service to include all fluids, filters and a cambelt. Probably the best unrestored example with absolute provenance and miniscule mileage.
