Mk1 Ford Escort Twin Cam

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

An AVO Club Registered and National Day winning Mk1 Ford Escort Twin Cam

MODEL HISTORY
Prior to the Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) Plant at Aveley being opened, all Twin Cam Escorts were constructed at Fords Halewood Factory. On the same assembly lines as other Escorts, through body assembly, paint and trim areas until the point mechanical components were added and make the vital body strengthening changes. At this stage they would be taken off the line into a separate small workshop where a dozen specially chosen workers were ready to slot in the unique components. Roger Clark took a ‘works’ Twin-Cam, registered XOO262F to its first international rally in April 1968 and Group 2 homologation was achieved on the 1st May 1968 when Ford convinced the authorities that 1000 cars had been made. By the middle of the year Twin-Cams were winning in rallies and on the race track. Queues built up and order books lengthened and most cars once delivered were usually rushed into a workshop, stripped and modified for a particular purpose. A total of just 1,263 Twin Cams were produced at Halewood and approximately 60 Twin Cams are registered with the AVO Club as of Jan 2020. (Source: Mark Heath AVO Twin Cam Registrar).

The rear bumper is a genuine Ford item but incorrect for the year and the chrome roof drip rails are not fitted. A small engine fire is well documented after the car failed to attend AVO Day in 2013 and photographs show the minor damage. The owner decided at this point to embark on a full engine rebuild and body restoration with invoices and photos to prove. It has continued to attend the show circuit with proven success since.

INTERIOR

Impeccable annual maintenance since it has been dyno tested and produces 130.6bhp. Front discs and larger rear drums as fitted to the Capri 3.0 and later AVO Escorts are pressurised by a Girling Powerstop remote servo recently overhauled in January 2020.

HISTORY FILE
Built at the Halewood factory in October 1970 this Twin Cam has been long registered with the Ford AVO Club and certified as a rare surviving example still with its original Type 49 bodyshell. First registered on the 9th March 1971 it has only had five former keepers. The last two keepers being Steve Smith in 2008, the then AVO Club Secretary followed by Graham Chadband in 2011 the Clubs PR & Events Organiser. Both individuals are incredibly experienced Twin Cam gurus and their lengthy ownership should help reassure the next custodian. Mr Chadband is fastidious with annual invoices for upkeep and a no expense spared mentality in making sure this example is on the button and can be driven anywhere. It recently enjoyed an outing to The Goodwood Revival Meeting in September 2019. The vehicle is well known on the show circuit winning Best Twin Cam in 2011 and 2017 and third in class in 2019, all at the prestigious Ford AVO Owners Club National Days. Honda C70-C

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

An original retro UK Honda C70-C Round Light model with 3,600 miles.

MODEL HISTORY
Introduced in 1958, the Honda Cub/Super Cub has been in continuous manufacture ever since and production surpassed 100 million in 2017 making it the most produced motor vehicle in history. The idea for a new 50cc motorcycle was conceived in 1956 when Honda Motor’s Soichiro Honda and Takeo Fujisawa toured Germany and witnessed the popularity of mopeds. The requirement however for the motorcycle to succeed in the developing world was, primarily simplicity, and larger wheels than those of a moped in order to cope with badly surfaced roads, or indeed non-existent roads in rural regions. Another requirement of Takeo Fujisawa was that the bike could be ridden one handed whilst carrying a tray of soba noodles, siting that the vast numbers of soba noodle shops in Japan would no doubt want one as a delivery bike. The iconic and phenomenally successful Honda Cub series is widely credited for mobilising and in large part, revolutionising, the developing world.

EQUIPMENT
Pressed steel underbone frame, 12-volt electrics, capacitor discharge ignition (CDI), polyethylene leg guard/cowling, black and white long seat, rear luggage rack, 3-speed clutchless transmission, fully enclosed drivetrain, horn, primary coupled kick-starter, chrome indicator housing, two adjustable mirrors, Nippon Seiki HO-791 speedometer, odometer, turn signal switch, headlight switch, neutral indicator, rear footrests, helmet lock, side storage with toolkit.

EXTERIOR
This wonderful 1984 C70-C is the more desirable ‘round headlight’ model and this example is finished in factory original Monza Red. Having covered just 3,600 miles from new, this remarkable example has never been restored and still boasts first paint credentials, virtually unheard of. A natural aged patina is entirely forgivable and does not spoil the appearance. All metal is in remarkable shape has never been welded or repaired and the polyethylene leg guard/cowling is incredibly well-preserved with no cracks. The front mudguard displays a small thumbnail size repair. Factory decals below the seat and original stickers and warning labels will further delight originality seekers, as will the factory badges, supplying dealer cowling sticker and plastic sheath over the foot brake pedal. The fully intact black and white seat covering is also factory fitment and the original number plate remains fitted. The toolkit is present in the side locker. All switchgear, lights and instruments are fully functional. This unspoilt C70 is deliciously retro and a fitting tribute to this Honda icon.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The frame identification stamping and identity plate are correct for the a 1984 C70-C and match the vehicle documentation, as does the clearly legible engine number stamp. The 71.8cc engine develops 6bhp, enough to propel this machine to 43mph (depending on the rider’s weight!). The exhaust is a replacement piece in superb order and a very good replication of the original item. The clutchless 3-speed ‘all down’ transmission is easy to use and in perfect working order. Surprisingly nippy and a lot of fun!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 36 spoke chromium plated wheel rims are unrestored and display outer rim stampings. 2.50-17 tyres retain excellent tread and good rubber condition. Waterproof-Dustproof brakes with 110mm front and rear drums perform as they should.

HISTORY FILE
Despite many minor revisions since its launch in 1958, the Honda Cub style and ethos as a bike for the masses has remained constant, and it is no surprise that true iconic status is firmly cemented. This UK supplied C70-C example was registered new on 14th March 1984 by Bridge Street Motor Cycles in Witham, Essex and has covered just 3,600 miles from new with just three owners. The original motorcycle service booklet is present with two stamped entries from the supplying dealer. The first issue blue V5 document made out to first owner, Mr Walter Punt, is in the history folder along with some previous MOT certificates and two original Honda keys still with dealer fob attached!

This example boasts originality credentials rarely found as well as being the more desirable round headlight model. Everything about these bikes is legendary from their go anywhere ability, phenomenal reliability and even the famously successful marketing slogan, “You meet the nicest people on a Honda”, which ran from 1963 for 12 years and is still used today as a marketing case study. An excellent example of one of the most significant motor vehicles ever created.

She refused to drive the car due to poor rear visibility and it remained virtually unused but carefully garaged before selling the car to their son in 1991. He remained the custodian until 2015 meaning this prime VW was owned by the same family for 37 years! Enthusiast owned by three keepers since, one of which being classic car fanatic Mr Jamie Stephens, embarking on a meticulous and painstaking restoration investing 100’s of hours with invoices totalling thousands. Enjoying the show circuit with awards to prove the high standard and even having its own Instagam Page, (Click here: angus_the _beetle), this really is an exception to the normal offerings. Mr Stephens made the difficult decision to sell the car only to buy a lifelong dream classic, a Ford Escort Mk2 RS Mexico. Very cool, immaculate and wanting for nothing.
