HISTORY
The Raleigh Chopper, although an icon of the 1970’s and where it saw the majority of its phenomenal success, was first launched in 1969 by the Raleigh Bicycle Company in Nottingham, England. The bikes design was influenced by dragsters, chopped motorcycles and beach buggies and it quickly became a cultural icon, especially among young people. Throughout the evolution of the Chopper from the Mark 1 to the Mark 5, the essence of the design has changed very little, but certain safety flaws linked to the Mark 1 and 2 had to be overcome following negative press in the 1970’s where it was in some cases labelled as a dangerous toy! These included the tendency for the bike to perform involuntary ‘wheelies’ particularly when giving a friend a ‘backie’ on the long padded high-back seat and also the groin catching T-Bar frame mounted gear lever. Thankfully after an absence of almost 25 years the Chopper was relaunched with a more conventional seat to deter the offering of ‘backies’ and re-siting of the gear lever to the handlebar, a more personal equipment friendly location! Whilst the original Choppers have gained highly collectable status and soaring prices, the limited-edition releases are extremely sought after among collectors.

DESCRIPTION
Fully assembled but never ridden, this very rare official UK Raleigh Mod Chopper Limited Edition represents a perfect collector’s item for Chopper fans all over the world. The Blue Matt finish to the frame is pristine and all Mod decals are as new. The explosion of the Mod subculture in the 1960’s and 70’s is perfectly reflected in this limited-edition Chopper with Roundel Target decals which were popularised largely by rock band The Who. The Roundel Target red, white and blue colours have been used on the brake/gear cable sheaths. Impossible to source and very expensive period Chopper tyres with the red pinstriping are fitted and are deliciously retro! Commensurate with the bike’s unridden credentials, this Raleigh Mod Chopper Limited Edition is in amazing order with only slight damage to the lower rear mudguard worthy of mention. What better to show your allegiance to the Mod cause, than a Mod emblazoned Raleigh Chopper!

FUNCTIONALITY
Modern specification separates this Chopper from its earlier Mark 1 and 2 brethren with 6-speed Shimano Revoshift derailleur gears controlled by a grip shift, aluminium V-brakes
and aluminium rims. Whilst unused the bike has been fully built to be ridden, should the purchaser require, by the current owner who is proprietor of an established cycle repair shop. He has amassed a very rare collection of mainly Raleigh Chopper’s and Raleigh BMX Burner’s based on his experience of working in the industry for over 40 years. The handbook and owners guide along with the Raleigh multi-hex spanner and Allan key are present.

Celebrating the famous Chopper phenomenon that singlehandedly saved a struggling Raleigh in the 1970’s, this Mod Chopper Limited Edition is one of only 1 of 500 made and is very highly prized.

Laminated windscreen, safety crumple zones, rigid passenger safety cell, front air spoiler, burst-proof locks, locking fuel cap, halogen headlamps, twin rear fog lamps, heated rear window, reclining front seats, upholstered front seat headrests, folding rear seat, Phillips push button mono stereo cassette, quartz clock, centre console, lidded glovebox. Dealer options; mudflaps.

EXTERIOR
Only very rarely is such an incredibly special vehicle seen, one that has defied the years to truly deserve the term ‘Time warp’. This very early Mk1 Vauxhall Astra finished in Mandarin Red, (Code 533), boasts a virtually flawless factory finish commensurate with the ultra-low genuine mileage and even more remarkable is the fact that the car is unrestored. The gleaming paintwork would put most one-year old vehicles to shame and the trim sections are perfect. Unique features of this very early 1980 example include the tailgate Vauxhall lettering centralised, absence of rear wash wipe and rear number plate shroud, lower boot lock position and bumper mounted rear number plate lamp. Earlier cars, even the base L model, had bright finish exterior door handles that were later changed to satin black. Originality seekers will be further thrilled to see supplying dealer number plates still fitted as well as the super clean and untouched underside displaying factory markings. It is difficult to imagine this not being the best example in existence.

INTERIOR
As new! Rarely does the opportunity arise to describe a classic car interior as perfect, however in this instance we feel it is entirely justified. The Red Tweed Cloth upholstery, (Code 245), is representative of a 10,448 mile garaged example with no wear or fading whatsoever. The door cards, trim sections, carpets and headlining are pristine and the dashboard is flawless. The controls and switchgear boast bright symbols which have avoided fading and discolouration and the steering wheel and gear knob have defined natural veins which are usually worn smooth with increased use. All equipment operates perfectly including the Phillips push button mono stereo cassette and even the nostalgia evoking period Vauxhall scent hasn’t escaped into the 1980’s atmosphere! It is beyond words how amazing this interior is.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
This 1300S incorporates the 1297cc OHC unit produces 75bhp at 5800rpm and 100Nm of torque at 4500 rpm. The car performs and drives beautifully and the instantly familiar free revving engine note is delightful. The engine bay is spotless and displaying factory plates, labels, PDI chalk markings and original panel stampings. The four-speed all-synchromesh manual gearbox is sturdy and direct. Simply wonderful.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Any collector will be delighted to see the standard 13in steel rims correctly 1980 date stamped and shod in the factory Michelin 155/80 R13 tyres. Those wanting to use the car are also catered for with a second set of pristine wheels shod in brand new premium brand Firestone tyres. The spare wheel is housed alongside a complete tool and jack assembly within the moulded foam holder. Diagonally split dual circuit brakes with servo assistance feature 9.3in front discs and 7.9in rear drums to bring the car to a steady and assured halt.

HISTORY FILE
Following UK launch of the all new German built Vauxhall Astra in March 1980, this very early example was registered new on the 4th June 1980 by Vauxhall Main Dealer, Moores & Newton of Wilmslow. The first registered keeper was sportswear and football equipment supplier, Umbro Ltd, whereby it was purchased by the Managing Director for his wife. After three years the car was registered to her personally and remained so until her passing in 2000 to be bequeathed to a family friend. The car has been in the hands of just two further collectors. The car was shown just twice by the previous owner, including at a large Ford show where it caused quite a stir by winning Car of the Show, considered sacrilege for a Vauxhall to do so at a Ford event!

The fantastic history file consists of the original book pack with all handbooks, guides, service booklet and dealership point of sale literature. There are two original sets of keys both with supplying dealer fobs and keys tags and even a ‘You’ll love driving our cars’ Astra badge! A further beautifully presented folder contains masses of invoices and receipts as well as every MOT certificate dating back to very first in 1983 to fully verify the mileage. Completing the superb history file are two original Astra Mk1 sales brochures. Personal inspection encouraged to appreciate just how special this car is.

HISTORY FILE
A wonderful history file befits an equally special car. Registered new on the 28th August 1998 by Volkswagen Main Dealer, Douglas Stewart Ltd of Waltham Cross, the car was ordered by Mrs Grace Fowle. The transaction began with Mrs Fowle making pre-order comparison notes on the back of a 1998 Model Year Polo sales brochure, the exact one of which still remains in the history file! Also kept is the original order form and sales invoice made out to Mrs Fowle illustrating the price paid of £10,500 including factory optional extras. Following taking delivery of the car there are hand written letters from the supplying dealer showing appreciation of a thank you card sent by Mrs Fowle for the bunch of flowers gifted with the car. The letter even refers to a game of golf planned by Mrs Fowle showing the very personal attention she had clearly received from her Volkswagen dealer! Purchased in retirement and used sparingly, the car was strictly garaged when not in use and in 2018 upon his Mother’s passing the car was registered to Mr John Fowle who continued to care for the car alongside his Jaguar E-Type and Porsche 930 Turbo!

Absolutely all handbooks, manuals and dealership point of sale literature is included in the leather document wallet along with the service book. There are two Volkswagen keys plus the master blade. A further large history folder contains service invoices and all MOT certificates dating back to the very first in 2001 to fully verify the genuine low mileage. The Cosworth YBT engine warrants little introduction and brief upgrades include items such as; genuine RS500 inlet manifold, throttle body, intercooler and exhaust manifold, gas flowed and ported head with bronze valve guides, WRC triple layer head gasket set, WRC spec oil breather system, Group A coil and motorsport leads, Mahle motorsport bearings throughout, 8X 803 Bosch Dark Green injectors, Garratt T4 turbo with uprated bearings and washers, long studded block, lightened and balanced fly wheel, Webber L8 Ford Motorsport ECU and Ahmed spec cams. The permanent Ferguson four wheel drive system with 34/66% front/rear power split mated to a MT 75 5-speed gearbox works fabulously.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Pristine 8 X 18” Compomotive TH alloy wheels are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres with masses of tread remaining. AP Racing 6 piston calipers filled with Ferodo DS2500 brake pads grip 362mm grooved discs up front and 325mm discs at rear. Koni uprated shocks and Ahmed Bayjoo spec springs combined with an Ahmed/SCS fully rose jointed WRC Group-A 6-degree rear beam is a phenomenal and highly sought-after package.

HISTORY FILE
Built at the Rheine Assembly Plant in Germany and registered new on the 8th December 1992 by Ford RS Dealer, Grays of Guilford, making this model one of the highly sought-after 2,500 large turbo homologation specials. The supplying dealer wrote to the first owner, Mr Christopher Pegg, confirming his request to have the car delivered to his home address prior to registration with the omission of window etching, fitting of front spoiler, fitting of number plates and to dewax only, not valet the car. Mr Pegg cossetted his pride and joy covering just 2,469 miles before selling the car to Kevin Rogers after 10 years in August 2002. Mr Rogers worked closely with Mark Burley, the owner of Grove Garage who confirms in a letter dated 7th March 2016 that he ‘personally serviced the car and also completed the power upgrade conversion, Ahmed Bayjoo spent several days mapping the car on the road and it was fitted with one of our first prototype rear beam setups which to this day are still manufactured and sold.’

All dealer literature, handbooks and spare keys are included with invoices neatly filed in an A4 folder. MOT certificates chronically filed and tax discs are included. The vehicle was sold to the current fourth owner Mr Simpson in April 2017 and a used vehicle invoice reveals a price paid of £55,800. This very special car with historical importance.

HISTORY FILE
Remarkable. Supplied by Honda Marshall of Peterborough on the 1st September 1999 to Mr Charles Ellis the new car brochure reveals his hand written notes and ticks specifying the Accord Type R with manual air conditioning and a Category 1 Alarm along with some other options. Gary was to become the only other and second owner in August 2019 after his father’s passing. The car has been serviced without fail by the supplying Honda dealer a total of 13 times during the 11,897 miles travelled. The last service was carried out in September 2019. All invoices, MOT certificates and documentation has been carefully filed leaving no doubt to the care bestowed on this iconic car. A full book pack and spare keys with Honda key fobs to both are included. The supplying dealer tax disc holder is included complete with expired discs. KGF Classic Cars were honoured to be contacted when Gary made the painful decision to sell the car his only stipulation being to find a good home for this prime example. Simplicity, ease of maintenance and fantastic parts availability were part of what made the Mustang so unbelievably successful and this mantra has never changed, a muscle car for the people. Cross referencing factory records and the vehicle identification number confirms this example is fitted with the correct 289 CID V8 engine which has benefitted from subtle upgrades to include a 4 barrell Holley carburettor, (4V), and Edelbrock manifold. The V8 burble and intoxicating roar is simply wonderful and everything you could desire from a classic Mustang. The engine bay is clean with factory labels and stickers as well as original Fomoco components. Fitted as a factory option is the Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed C4 automatic transmission operated by a floor mounted T-bar handle which operates exactly as it should.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

HISTORY FILE
Information from factory records confirms that this Mustang was manufactured on the 26th August 1965, (one of the first of the 1966 Model Year specification cars), and registration took pace in the district of Los Angeles. Further decoding of the VIN confirms the build specification; body type – 2 door hardtop with standard buckets seats, colour and trim, axle and transmission. The factory fitted VIN plate remains attached to the rear face of the left door. The supplying dealer was Don Hartunian’s Hollywood Ford on Hollywood Boulevard and the car was first registered to Werner Salomen, M.D. Remarkably the new car sales literature has been keep including the original sales invoice confirming the order, options and a price paid of $3,365.99. The service booklet is present. The car enjoyed long term ownership while in the US with the first owner, Angelika Salomen, owning the car well into the 1980’s! The current owner viewing many Mustangs and even commissioned a new build which was terminated in the early stages due to poor workmanship when eventually this example was discovered and snapped up.

A huge history file is a joy to read and thorough perusal of such would take hours. There are masses of invoices, many of which date back throughout the 1970, 80’s and 90’s. In March 2018 the car was imported to the UK whereby full DVLA registration took place.

The car is a wonderful example of an unspoilt 1966 Ford Mustang, wanting for nothing and ready to enjoy. A guaranteed wide-smile slice of Americana!
