Following on from the first and second special editions, the Series McRae and the Cataluyna, the 1998 release of the Terzo which translated from Italian to mean ‘Third’ was released to commemorate Subaru’s third successive World Rally Championship. Production was upped to 333 cars from the 200 cars made for each of its two predecessors with no number 13 owing to Italian propensity for superstition. A lighter shade of the Blue Mica was chosen along with 16in gold wheels, Alcantara seats and non-folding rear seats which aided increased rigidity. A very important piece of Subaru history and UK Special Editions.

EQUIPMENT

All door apertures are pristine with factory labels intact.

HISTORY FILE
Rallye Sport Escorts including the Mexico, RS1600 and RS2000 were built at Fords Advanced Vehicle Operations factory in Aveley, all practically handbuilt. This stunning example was built in May 1974 and is one of just a handful produced in Marine Blue. According to the AVO Club database of 1073 cars, only 4 Marine Blue cars were known to exist, of which two now remain. This particular example was purchased by Derrin James, serial car collector and previous owner of Brian James Trailers, in May 2013. His extensive hunt for a Marine Blue Mk1 sporting Escort was fuelled by a passion to have a car similar to his first ever vehicle, a Marine Blue Mk1 Ford Escort 1300 Sport! He even kept the aftermarket alloys fitted to his Sport to place on this car! Purchased from a dealer in Perth after a vehicle inspection to confirm the credentials, the car was entrusted and extensively restored by CWC Restorations with catalogued documentation throughout. Invoices totalling tens of thousands prove the desire to have a near perfect example where cost was very much a secondary consideration! With little use since the restoration and the realisation that one’s first car is viewed with rose tinted spectacles, the decision to sell was made. Now offered after having performed a running-in check by KGF Classic Cars this example is ready for the Blue Oval enthusiast.

The wheels are in amazing unrestored condition with clearly defined part number stampings and perfect Skoda centre caps. Factory fitted 165/70 R13 Barum OR52 all-weather tyres are a rare sight on a UK car as UK customers were offered an upgrade to a premium brand Goodyear tyre alternative which most buyers opted for. The servo assisted braking system is factory standard and stops the car as it should.

The Sparkle Green metallic paint, (Code 11R), presents in fabulous condition with a stunning deep shine throughout. All bodywork panels are arrow straight and the underside, sills and wheel arches are structurally perfect. All Berkeley Limited Edition equipment is present and correct with the boot rack even still wearing the maximum load caution sticker! The original hood is as new and further total originality is found in the factory etched glass and supplying Mazda main dealer number plates. A critical eye will notice none other than very light markings to the plastic rear screen and a tiny shallow ding to the nearside front wing. The hugely desirable and expensive factory optional hard top is present with a few tiny marks and comes with the original wall mounting kit and cover for safe storage. One of the best remaining of the original 400 produced.

INTERIOR
Standard and unique to the Berkeley Limited Edition is the Black and light Grey leather seat facings with matching light Grey door panels (Code NA3). Commensurate with the low 21,541 miles covered, the interior is beautifully clean and the seats retain correct shape with no damage. Again, absolutely all Berkeley Limited Edition interior features are present including the numbered plaque, (293/400), Momo leather steering wheel and carpet mat set in excellent order. The dashboard wears the original dark Burr wood trim which has discoloured slightly to the edges and further special features such as the suspension brace bar and stainless-steel scuff plates are present with some markings. A marvellous special edition MX-5 interior.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The Berkeley Edition was based on the 1.8i model and the lightweight 16v DOHC engine sits low and behind the front axle to offer a low centre of gravity and centralised weight distribution making handling perfectly balanced and delightfully responsive. The engine bay is spotlessly clean with factory plates, panel stamps, PDI dabs and stickers all present and undamaged. The phenomenal close ratio short throw gearbox provides light and precise gear changes. Brilliant!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This exceptional Mazda has factory fitted 15” alloy wheels which are in pristine order with chromed Mazda centre caps. New premium Dunlop 195/50 R15 tyres have been fitted in May 2022 and have covered zero miles. The servo assisted braking system is factory standard and stops the car quickly.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Main Dealer, Hodgson Mazda of Newcastle, the car was registered on the 31st March 1998 making it one of the last Mk1 or NA Series MX-5’s. The car has covered a verified 21,541 miles from new with just two former keepers. The previous owner, Mr Robson, purchased the car in 2010 and is an avid enthusiast and MX-5 Owner’s Club member who recognised the importance of this very special car and knew that preserving such a low mileage example was vital. The original Mazda document wallet holds all handbooks, guides and dealership literature including the service book, and the most recent service was in May 2022 at 21,541 miles along with a cambelt change. A separate large history folder contains service invoices and MOT’s certificates. There are three Mazda keys and an original Mazda MX-5 Berkeley Limited Edition sales brochure. A highly collectible special edition MX-5 preserved to the highest order.

The rugged styled trim pieces and ‘Buxy’ decals are fully intact and damage free and all clips, nuts and bolts are excellent. The footboard, faring, rubbers and switchgear are all as new, as is the seat which lifts to reveal factory stickers intact as well as the original frame number stamp. An effortlessly stylish and beautifully preserved example, perfect for café culture fashionistas, or as the brochure suggests, riding through a stream while your friends watch and clap!

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 2-stroke single cylinder air cooled engine features CDI ignition, automatic choke and electric start for effortless everyday use. This quiet 50cc unit is incredibly frugal! All mechanical components are spotless clean with factory PDI dabs preserved and the original exhaust remains fitted. The fully auto transmission with automatic centrifugal clutch works perfectly and allows straightforward fool proof scootering with a guaranteed beaming smile!

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The gunmetal light alloy wheels are original and as new as are the super-chunky factory fitted Michelin Reggae tyres of size 120/90-10 front and 130/90-10 rear which still have rubber nobbles and coloured banding within the tread. This Buxy features a single 190mm front disc and 110mm rear drum braking set up which stops the bike quickly and safely.

HISTORY FILE
In 1995, a company called Three Cross Motorcycles began importing Peugeot scooters to the UK. Mr Gudgeon, a Garden Centre Proprietor, purchased a number of unregistered scooters with the idea to retail them from his Garden Centre business. The Buxy was priced at £1,549 + OTR charges but after limited success with this venture, it was decided that his skills lay in selling soil and mulch, not scooters and mopeds! All bikes were sold bar two, this Buxy and a similar Zenith L model. The very minimal mileage was accrued as the scooters were used for fun on the large garden centre site and they were stored at other times in one of the large dry barns. KGF Classic Cars are selling this bike as an unregistered example, however an official dating certificate has been acquired from Peugeot Scooters confirming the bike was manufactured on the 10th November 1995. This will allow the bikes to easily be UK registered with the DVLA. The bike starts, runs and rides and all functions operate, however the bike is being sold as an unregistered collector’s example for display and full recommissioning, MOT and registration will be required if the bike is to be put into use.

The original service and warranty book are present along with a sales brochure and price list as well as the original build label and Three Cross Motorcycles PDI certificate. The decade of boy bands, Gladiators and Global Hypercolor t-shirts, the 90’s could not be more in vogue right now and what better way to celebrate this than an as new Peugeot Buxy scooter!
