EXTERIOR
The first-generation Toyota MR2 certainly needs no introduction to the motoring hall of fame having taken the automotive world by storm at first launch in 1984. This astonishing Mk1b example has covered a remarkably low 31,117 miles from new with wife and husband ownership throughout. Finished in original Toyota Super Red, (Code II 3E5), the gorgeous paintwork boasts a deep lustrous shine and uniform finish throughout. All factory panels are pin straight and free from damage or corrosion, and only very light touched in markings can be seem, utterly insignificant. All factory trim pieces that form the iconic 1980’s styling are perfectly preserved and original badges and decals are in excellent order. There is some light delamination to the corners of the windscreen. The supplying Toyota dealer rear screen sticker and oversize rear number plate remain fitted. Garaged from new and strictly used in dry conditions only, this beautifully preserved example is a credit to the dedicated ownership enjoyed from new.
INTERIOR
Trimmed in the standard Black Cloth upholstery, (Code YA21), this interior is exactly how Toyota intended, even down to the working Toyota radio cassette! The spotless sports seats are hugely supportive and comfortable and remain in near showroom condition with unworn fabric and firm bolsters. The delightfully boxy yet quality finished fascia is as much ‘1980’s’ as the exterior and the low-slung seating position with high centre console really creates the cockpit driving experience. All functions and controls operate perfectly and the gauges and dials provide concise readings, just as you would expect from Japanese engineering. The three spoke sports leather steering wheel and gear knob remain in the perfect condition only found on such low mileage examples. Iconic in every way.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
To experience driving a well maintained, tight and cared for Mk1 MR2 is a true motoring delight. The lightweight 1.6 litre 16v twin-cam engine sits low and fore of the rear axle with 55% of the kerb weight distributed to the rear driving wheels, the perfect configuration for pure driving enjoyment. Performance output figures quoted in the marketing literature for the 4A-GE AW11 engine are 123bhp at 6600rpm and 145Nm torque at 5000rpm, with a top speed of 125mph and 0-60mph in 8.2 seconds. The time proven engine is lively with power flow very responsive and tremendous fun! Both the engine and front compartments are pristine with every clip, bolt and bracket spotlessly clean and all original labels, plates and panel stamps are intact. The close ratio slingshot-like gearbox provides light and precise gear changes. Perfection!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This exceptional Toyota retains its factory fitted 14” teardrop alloy wheels which have been refurbished and are shod in matching 185/60R14 tyres with excellent tread remaining. The instantly recognisable wheels look superb with only a tiny blemish to the offside rear rim. The tool kit, wheel brace and spare wheel are all present and spotlessly clean. Disc brakes to all four wheels operate perfectly and offer steady straight-line stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
This astonishing example, one of the final Mk1 cars on a G prefix, was registered new on 26th January 1990 by Toyota Main Dealer, Ashley Smithy Garage of Altrincham. A new car sales invoice in the history file for £12,500 is made out to a Mrs Glenys Cook who purchased the car brand new.
