EXTERIOR
One of the rarest of hot hatches and preserved in amazing condition, this Phase 1 AX GT is the highly desirable three door version with factory optional Superlustre Platinum Metallic, (Code 4985). The paintwork is incredible and virtually mark free having had some remedial works carried out. A touched in mark to the roof edge, one to the driver’s door sill and slight thinning to the lacquer on the front grille are very minor imperfections. All light weight body panels are remarkably straight with only a tiny ding to the top of the offside front wing, barely noticeable. The plastic bumpers and sporting trims sections are as new. Unique AX GT badges and sporty twin red coach line are perfect and originality seekers will be pleased to see supplying dealer number plates and all original glass pieces security etched. Having covered just 29,577 miles, this unmolested and virtually extinct AX GT is a brilliant find and will delight collectors of 1980’s sporting super minis.
INTERIOR
To lift the quirky concealed AX door latches and climb in to this cabin space is a true delight of 1980’s nostalgia! The delightfully boxy fascia with red pinstripe unique to the GT reminds you of the sporting credentials, as do the figure-hugging sports front seats. The red-trimmed Stratos velour upholstery is literally as new with no visible wear whatsoever, as is the AX GT carpeting with distinctive wipe red stripe running through the cabin on both sides. Low mileage credentials are displayed in the small three spoke sports steering wheel showing prominent veins and no wear, as does the gear knob which has a small crack and the red insert missing. The radio is intermittent in operation and the heater fan works on setting three only. Tyre pressure stickers remain affixed inside the spotless driver’s door aperture. Gallic eccentricities have not been overlooked with large moulded bottle holders in the door cards, reputedly designed to carry a bottle of wine securely! The boot area contains the ultra-rare and usually misplaced sunroof bag as well as the original jack and brace. An immaculate unspoilt interior.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
This early AX GT with 1360cc engine and Solex carburettor produces 85hp at 6400rpm and is totally standard in every respect. A top speed of 112mph and 0-60mph in 8.8 seconds is quoted, yet this little pocket rocket feels much quicker! The very clean engine bay will delight originality seekers with all factory stickers, plates and wing panel stampings intact. Even the painted colour code to the offside strut top is clearly visible. The five-speed close ratio manual transmission offers light and direct changes with a sporty feel.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The factory fitted 14” GT alloy wheels have the correct diamond cut finish with gloss black inserts and are in immaculate condition. Matching Michelin Energy Saver 165/65 R14 tyres were fitted brand new in 2018 and are virtually unused. The dual-circuit X configuration servo assisted brakes provide safe assured stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
Any Phase 1 Citroen AX is a very rare sight on today’s roads, even more so the GT which has all but disappeared. Registered new on 1st August 1990 by Citroen Main Dealer G.R Hartwell Ltd of Poole, this preserved example has covered just 29,577 miles from new and the condition is amazing. The history file consists of the full original Citroen document wallet containing all handbooks, guides and point of sale literature as well as the service book with 11 stamps. The last service entry was in May 2018 by Citroen Specialists French Connection UK. Ltd. Services which also included a brake overhaul. A file of invoices and MOT certificates completes the history file along with both sets of keys and an original AX range brochure. This car has come from a large collection of classic cars and represents a very rare example of an often modified and abused hot hatch. This hugely entertaining AX GT is without doubt one of the best in existence.
