EXTERIOR
This incredibly rare Fiesta Supersport is finished in Diamond White, (Code B 3), has a deep shine of a well polished and pampered car. Knowledgeable scrutineers will be amazed how this fragile example has survived in the correct Ford production guise with factory original panels. Unique to the Supersport, single holes in front/rear panes for bumper fixings in the correctly sized recesses supplements the obvious bulge in the rear valence to accommodate the spare alloy wheel. Some paint has rubbed off the inner bottom of the tailgate and the lock surround has been touched in. Correct Hella halogen headlights and Ford twin driving lamps remain fitted along with the radiator grille in matching body colour all special Supersport features. The black polyurethane front and rear spoilers and wheelarch extensions remain undamaged and incredibly the car is still fitted with its gradient-tinted windscreen as part of the Climate Control Pack. Wonderful.
INTERIOR
The reclining front seats finished in Savannah and Carla Supersport Red fabric, (Code K1), have never been subject to a retrim and are still in amazing condition. The carpets, door cards and headlining remain undamaged and only the very top of the rear seat displays wear. All gauges and illuminated switchgear are in working order and even the upgraded mono radio/stereo cassette player as part of the optional Executive Pack remains fitted and functional! The boot area is spotless and completely original. The plastic boot tray remains in situ containing the Ford jack and purists will be astounded to see the blue scribed numbers on the boot floor written in January 1981 when the car was produced. Rest assured, this interior will be the envy of all Fast Ford fans!
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The Kent 2V engine, (KL13G), code J3E with 1297cc produces 66PS and performs brilliantly in such a lightweight car. Many original features unique to the Supersport will please perfectionists such as the metal build plate with correct identification digits and the front strut tops are of the flatter design unlike all other Fiesta bodyshells. The huge washer bottle is fitted due to the option of headlight washers. Some areas of paint have rubbed off the inner bonnet and the original coolant additive sticker remains attached. The 4-speed synchromesh gearbox with remote shift operates correctly.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Stunning Ford RS 4-spoke 13 X 6 alloy wheels with the black centre caps are standard fitment to the Supersport and are an important visual enhancement. Pirelli P6 Cinturato 185/60 R13 tyres are still fitted including the spare all of which have ample tread but a change is advised if regular use is intended remembering to keep the originals! The dual line servo assisted brakes with 8.7” front discs and 7.0” rear drums bring the car to a halt but fall short of modern brakes.
HISTORY FILE
On the 18th July 1980 the Ford Press Office announced the launch of their latest special edition model, based on the Fiesta 1300cc “S” and named the Fiesta Supersport. Only 3000 were built and this genuine example was produced in January 1981. Registered on the 23rd March 1981 this Supersport is recorded on the Register and known to the Club. Every MOT certificate from the first until 1999 when the vehicle had covered 69,272 miles before being put into safe storage. In 2007 the car was MOT’d at 69,361 miles where regular MOT history has continued. The V5 will state zero former keepers due to a short period of time with an Irish collector but the actual number of recorded owners from new is five. Lovely artefacts are present in the history file such a receipt in 1984 when the car was sold for £3000, historic XR Supersport Register Membership Cards and classic car show entry forms from when the car was exhibited. A Currie Motors wallet containing all the Ford handbooks remains with the car along with two sets of Ford keys. Representing a fantastic element of Ford’s historic sporting pedigree, this highly collectable model has become virtually impossible to source in such an unmolested condition and is now ready for the next custodian to enjoy.
