EXTERIOR
The Yamaha 250 Street DS7 was built for just one year in 1972 and was the initial forerunner to the popular RD Series, introduced in 1973. This example is finished in the desirable and wonderful period colour scheme of Black and Gold from Black and Blue. The pristine paintwork to the petrol tank, side faring and headlamp bowl boasts a deep shine and superb glossy finish having been subject to professional refurbishment in 2013. The Featherbed-type double cradle frame is in fantastic order and the stock VIN stamping is clearly legible. The bright chrome pieces are in excellent order with only very light ageing evident, most notable being two small dings to the front lower mudguard. The seat covering with Yamaha lettering to the rear is completely damage free and all switchgear, controls, light and gauges operate as they should. A fantastic collectable example of this very rare two-stroke street machine.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The original engine number stamping confirms this as a matching numbers machine. The 2-stroke, 5 port parallel twin engine has a 247cc displacement and produces 30hp at 7500rpm and 21.1lb-ft of torque at 7000rpm. Manufacturer marketing literature quotes a maximum speed range of 93-100mph, quarter mile in 14.8 seconds and climbing ability of 24 degrees! Advanced features at the time such as Yamahas Autolube system eliminate bothersome messy premixing of fuel and facilitates automatic feeding of just the right amount of oil to the engine as needed. This example kicks into life effortlessly and performs wonderfully. The engine is spotlessly clean and the original crank casing retains the high-polished finish and Yamaha lettering. The 5-speed ‘one down four up’ transmission with working neutral indicator is effortless in operation.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 36 spoke chromium plated wheel rims are unrestored and display only very light aging, but nothing to detract from the bright shiny finish. Quality branded 90/90 18 front and 3.50-18 rear tyres retain excellent tread and good rubber condition. Waterproof-Dustproof brakes are non-fade with minimum braking distance quoted in the manufacturer marketing literature of 46ft at 30mph. The brakes perform exactly as intended.
