The underside is outstanding and has never been dismantled with even all the original FIAT stamped bolts still in place throughout. The sills, panel edges, seams and jacking points are perfectly preserved. All factory fitted chrome and badges are in superb order and further remarkable originality can be seen in the correct Carello headlamps and Altissimo and Wipac light lens throughout. Only very rarely does such an untouched example become available, this car is not to be confused with the normal.
INTERIOR
The often-misused term ‘time warp’ is absolutely appropriate with this stunning unspoilt interior, even down to the 1970’s Fiat scent! The genuine 12,050 miles covered is reflected in the upholstery to the seats and matching door cards in amazing preserved condition with no damage whatsoever. The 500L models were fitted with full carpeting which in this example is original and immaculate, as is the roof insulation panel and folding sunshine roof. The fascia, beautiful thin two-spoke steering wheel and 500L flat instrument binnacle are in superb condition as is the switchgear and very neat dealership installed Beltek radio and sigaretta lighter. All equipment and control’s function including the original hand throttle, a device linked directly to the throttle pedal to form what is effectively a rudimentary cruise control system! The front luggage compartment is very clean and still has the factory chassis stamp and VIN plate and all trim materials. Classic Fiat preservation at its most wonderful.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The original two-cylinder air cooled rear mounted engine thrums along beautifully and develops 18bhp with a top speed of 59mph. The vehicle has just had a full mechanical and electrical service in November 2021. The rear engine hatch lowers to reveals a clean unmolested compartment and the original matching numbers engine. Factory stickers are present as is the Duckhams and fuel pump warning labels to the hatch lid. The 4-speed constant mesh gearbox operates perfectly but requires familiarisation to the novice classic car driver.
WHEELS, TYRES, BRAKES
The disc type steel wheels and bright hubcaps are in remarkable condition and premium Pirelli Cinturato CN54 125 SR12 tyres were fitted brand new all-round in November 2021 at great expense. The well-maintained hydraulic brakes have just had new brake shoes on all four wheels and give adequate performance compared to modern standards.
HISTORY FILE
Registered new on the 20th September 1972, this rare UK RHD 500L was supplied by a West London Fiat Main dealer to first owner, Mr Bexnon, who is named in the original service book along with the expiry date of the generous six-month warranty! After three years the vehicle was sold to Mrs Maureen Guyton who, like all the subsequent three owners, used the car sparingly. The sizeable history file is neatly presented with invoices and previous MOT certificates as well as correspondence between owners with interesting facts and pointers about the cars history and helping to track the genuine 12,050 miles from new. An original 1972 Fiat range brochure and 500L price list reveals a new 500L would relieve you of £628.69! The handbook and service book are present and there are two original sets of keys which operate all locks.
This example will only compare vastly superior to the majority and will compliment even the best classic car collections. This is a truly special Fiat 500L.
