EQUIPMENT
Chrome mudguards front and rear, chrome side repeaters, circular orange side reflectors, illuminated speedometer and tachometer, ignition switch, turn signal switch, headlight switch, dimmer switch, engine kill switch, neutral indicator, oil warning lamp, high beam light, horn, rear footrests, fuel valve, helmet holder, tool kit, lockable fuel cap.
EXTERIOR
Finished in Clean White with the famous red Yamaha speed block motif, the appearance of this thoroughbred can only be described as stunning. The attention to detail is outstanding, with the tank and decals factory correct such as the back ground behind the four hundred zero’s are hollow (not filled in black like earlier models). The high-tensile steel tubular double-cradle frame has been sandblasted and professionally painted in gloss black with the important UK frame number 1A3-330…. clearly visible. The chrome has a mirror finish and the seat base remains the original steel item containing an owner’s manual and concealing a full Yamaha tool kit. Amazingly the original and desirable chrome exhaust system remains fitted with part numbers clearly visible with a few minor marks and the forks have been ground back and hard chromed to correct size. All instrumentation is factory fitment and in excellent condition. A street machine without equal.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The matching numbers 2-stroke torque induction engine has a 398cc displacement and produces 44bhp at 7500rpm. Featuring many advanced features at the time such as Yamahas Autolube system varying the delivery of oil linked to the throttle and precise ignition timing by utilising transistorised capacitor discharge ignition CDI. The engine and crank have been completely rebuilt and the main casings aqua blasted to restore the original finish. The 6-speed constant mesh transmission has perfectly selected ratios and a multi-plate clutch running in oil for feather light changes and a short-throw shift lever to allow quick gear changes. As the engine has been fully rebuilt, a 500 mile running in period is recommended.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The RD400F is fitted with stylish cast-alloy wheels with red detailing and are presented in fabulous undamaged condition. Matching Avon RoadRider 110/90 V18 rear and 90/90 18 front have masses of tread. Hydraulic 267mm disc brakes front and rear with single piston calipers and upgraded braided hoses are fitted. The desirable and original brake master cylinder remains fitted all of which help stop this iconic machine effectively and safely.
HISTORY FILE
This is a rare, iconic and importantly UK matching numbers Yamaha RD400F with just three owners from new. The last owner, Mr Mark Moore, purchased the bike in 2013 travelling considerable distance during a snowy winter’s day to collect it, knowing such credentials are near impossible to find and not wishing to miss out! A Yamaha collector and restorer of the highest standing, his collection of bikes and passion for the marque are the envy of many and this example is one of his long term favourites. Fully functional and not just a display piece, a collection of invoices, an owner’s manual and a wealth of information from Mr Moore should the next lucky custodian wish to utilise.
