EXTERIOR
Volvo’s design for the 700 Series with its sharp angular lines and steeply raked rear screen is unmistakable as it is unique, and this amazing 740 GL is finished in factory original Polar White (code 189-2). Incredibly for a vehicle wearing its original coating, and owing to Volvo’s seven layer paint process, the finish is impeccable with a bright pure shine and uniform presentation. There is a tiny ding to the bonnet and a miniscule section of the black coach line to the rear nearside that is broken, barely noticeable. Needless to say this garaged from new example is pure pleasure and the pristine condition is a credit to the former keeper who has cherished the car since 1990! All trims sections and brightwork are perfect including the correct badges. The bumpers are in fantastic order with only the faintest scratch to the front nearside corner, almost undetectable. The nearside headlamp has a chip repair. Quite simply an extraordinary example preserved in astonishing condition, a real enthusiasts car.
INTERIOR
The interior of this example is truly remarkable and offers safe, spacious comfort for all occupants. The original Blue Plush velour upholstery (code 15) is as new with no wear or discoloration whatsoever. The matching deep pile carpeting is spotless having been protected from new by not only the tailored blue Volvo rigid tray carpet protectors but also a second set of Volvo rubber mats, a sure sign of a cosseting owner! The headlining, often prone to sagging on these models is absolutely perfect and completely intact. The dashboard and fascia is pristine with all functions and controls seamless in operation. The previous keeper being a mechanical engineer by trade conscientiously fitted a discreet oil pressure gauge to help ensure his pride and joy was operating correctly and an aftermarket alarm sensor remains neatly installed. Even the Volvo boot organiser attached to the inner rear slam panel remains with the car! The interior condition is commensurate with a 1986 Volvo showroom example and the term ‘timewarp’ is absolutely warranted.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The almost indestructible Volvo B230K four in-line cylinder engine displaces 2316cc and produces 117bhp at 5200rpm and 194Nm torque at 2500rpm. Maintained without compromise, the engine is beautifully quiet and smooth with faultless performance. The five speed M47 gearbox is reassuringly solid and precise and delivers effortless changes throughout the range. Volvo engineering at its best.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Five unrestored original pressed steel rims are in pristine order and the complimenting chrome centre caps and outer embellishers are perfect. Quality Continental ContiEcoContact 185/70 R14 tyres all round have excellent tread remaining. The spare wheel still wears the original Michelin item which appears almost unused. Power assisted triangular split circuit brakes incorporating discs all round offer excellent straight line stopping power.
HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 1 September 1986 by Volvo Main Dealers Dee Motors Ltd of Chester, the previous keeper Mr William has owned this 740 since September 1990 with just one previous owner before him. The very same supplying Volvo Main Dealer renamed as Drayton Motors of Chester sold the car twice and a used vehicle sales invoice illustrates a purchase price of £6,600 at four years old. Mr Williams, a Mechanical Engineer by trade, was fanatical in his approach to care and maintenance of his beloved Volvo, and the condition today is the ultimate testament to this. An avid Volvo Owners and Caravan Club member, he used the vehicle for family holidays and post retirement holidays.
The history file further consists of the original service record book fully stamped up to 42,300 miles with Mr Williams carrying out professional and fastidious maintenance himself thereafter. The original blue A5 Volvo wallet contains every handbook, operating guide and point of sale literature, and a separate folder contains invoices and MOT certificates. An original sales brochure, Volvo towing guide and three sets of keys complete the history file.
