Factory Options: Air conditioning.

EXTERIOR
This UK Lupo GTi is one of less than 1,000 cars allocated to the UK and it is believed that only 77 were finished in Raven Blue Metallic, (Code LA5W). The paintwork is exceptional and boasts a stunning bright shine and uniform finish. All lightweight factory panels are pin straight with even shut lines and miniscule imperfections are barely worthy of mention, namely a tiny blister to the boot spoiler and small blemish to the boot lid itself. The factory VAG light clusters are crystal clear and the honey comb air intakes, grille and colour coded trim sections are immaculate. Cherished throughout, the wheel arch apertures, door and boot shuts are spotlessly clean, the latter having factory stickers still intact. Look no further for a cult modern classic hot hatch.

INTERIOR
The spotless interior is reflective of the very low 44,460 miles covered and kicking against the typically understated VW interior styling are the deep sculptured sports front seats and bright red seat belts all round. The Interwoven Velour upholstery in Black, (Code UX), is essentially perfect with no wear visible. The three spoke leather steering wheel and GTi logo on the gear knob are clues this model is both special and well preserved and only light scratches to the driver’s door pull is an imperfection worthy of mention. All equipment and controls are perfect in condition and operation, including the factory optional air conditioning and original VW Gamma radio cassette. The boot area is pristine with the factory code sticker, further labels and the factory compressor, tool kit and tyre sealant still sealed in cellophane! A remarkable showroom fresh cockpit defying its 17 years of age.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Proudly a member of the hallowed GTi family is this sporting Lupo GTi with its punchy 16v 1.6 litre powerplant featuring variable valve timing to develop 125bhp and 152Nm of torque. In a car weighing just 1,015kg, the top speed is quoted in marketing literature at 127mph and 0-62mph is dispatched in just 8.3 seconds. A Stage 1 remap by Avon Tuning has been carried out achieving an extra 7bhp and 11Nm of torque on the above manufacturer quoted figures. The engine bay is pristine and exactly as Volkswagen intended with all factory stickers and plates intact. The slick 6-speed manual short-throw gearbox is perfectly matched to this rapid and agile driving machine.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Unique 15-inch Bathhurst alloy wheels are immaculate having been professionally refurbished in the correct finish with brand new genuine VAG centre caps. Matching Toyo Proxes 205/45 R15 tyres have masses of tread remaining. The correct bright red callipers, unique to the GTi model, look superb through the chunky spoke apertures and the ABS brakes with discs to all four corners (ventilated to the front) bring the car up to a steady assuring halt.

HISTORY FILE
Supplied new by Heritage Volkswagen of Weston-Super-Mare and first registered on the 21st May 2003, this rare and exceptional Lupo GTi is a genuine UK car, one of less 1,000 supplied to the UK. The mileage of 44,460 miles is fully verified in the comprehensive service history which consists of all handbooks, manuals and dealership literature in the leather document wallet including the original service book displaying 17 stamped entries. The most recent service was carried out in 2019 at 41,536 miles and in 2017 the cambelt was changed along with the water pump and auxiliary drive belt. All work carried is fully documented and there is a further large folder of receipts, service invoices and previous MOT certificates. Completing the history file is two original VW remote keys and a Lupo range sales brochure. Cherished ‘GTi’ registration plate GT03EYE is assigned to the car and will remain so.

It is clearly evident in both the condition and history that this car has been pampered from new and rarely does the opportunity arise to obtain such a low mileage example of this cult modern classic baby GTi.

HISTORY FILE
This example was first registered on the 12th March 2001 by Hartwell Volkswagen in Cheshire. An invoice dated 26th February 2001 from Young Conversions Ltd confirms that this LWB T4 Transporter was converted from brand new to this full specification campervan. Young Conversions Ltd were founded in 1988 and remain in business today with further details of the company available here. The first owner, Mr Derek Hook, purchased the van brand new and subsequently paid a staggering £12,428.74 for the conversion as detailed on the invoice from Young Conversions Ltd which also lists the full specification. After ten years of ownership the campervan was passed to family member, Mr Paul Hook, and with just one other owner in-between the vehicle was purchased by Volkswagen collector, Mr Paul Willcock. Mr Willcock is very well known for his ongoing collection of prized show winning classic Volkswagen Beetles and Campervans and used this very vehicle for a European excursion.

The exceptionally low mileage of 16,036 miles is fully verified by every MOT certificate from the very first in 2004 and the full Volkswagen book pack and binder folder is complete with the service book. Absolutely all instructions, leaflets and brochures for the conversion have been kept along with a file of invoices and receipts including recent expenditure for tyres and a full genuine Volkswagen exhaust system. In April 2020 a documented full service, cambelt, injection pump belt, water pump and brake overhaul were completed. There are two sets of remote keys plus the original master key. The private registration number Y60 FLY is retained as a tongue-in-cheek gesture of the first owners belief, ‘why fly when you can camp?!’ Fast becoming highly collectable and very rare to find with such low mileage, this T4 Transporter is the perfect retro campervan.

A few tasteful improvements such as LED rear lights still housed in their snowflake rear lenses and front indicators mounted below the front bumper to maintain the oval smoothie look work great. A first for the new ‘61 Spec 40bhp model were Satin Blue running boards and these have been retained with a slightly lower stance achieved on Sway-A-Way front beam adjusters and the rear torsion bar turned down, easily reversed. Such is the amazing show appeal of this car it even has its own Instagram Page angus_the_beetle with 1,950 Followers and counting!

INTERIOR
Prepared to be wowed with an interior perfect in appearance and quality fitment throughout. Attention to detail will be missed by most with even the door opener and window winder positioned exactly when closed to mimic factory specification! Expensive Newton Commercial Beetle carpets are protected by rubber over mats and a quality Grey mohair headlining looks stunning. Originality seekers will note the obvious and new for ‘61 Spec cars, 90mph speedometer, but may miss the under bonnet factory card board liner, (protected by an overlaid replacement), hiding the original production number chalked in yellow underneath. A quality wooden Nardi Classic Steering Wheel with polished spokes and a discreet sound system has been installed. Very few classic cars meet the standards set by this remarkable example.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
With traceable history from new this is a rare matching numbers car with the factory four cylinder horizontally opposed rear air cooled engine of 1192cc still fitted. Producing 40bhp at 3900rpm, (up from the 36bhp of the earlier engine), it even retains the Solex downdraft carburettor 28 PICT with automatic choke to enable a top speed of 72mph. With a full rebuild, copious invoices and show winning appearance this engine performs and looks stunning. All engine tinware has been powder coated and everything is detailed. The fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox of single plate dry clutch type operates perfectly offering light and precise progression throughout the range.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Five pristine pressed steel wheels painted in original White L-87 and Gulf Blue L-390 with Gloss Black to the rear are shod in premium Continental Contact 165/80 R15 tyres all-round. The spare wheel houses a near impossible to source metal VW circular case complete with tools and a restored VW jack and handle painted in correct colours is present. Single circuit braking system with drums all-round offer modest stopping power.

HISTORY FILE
A spectacular history. Built in June 1960 as a RHD UK model with the new 40bhp engine, this is a matching numbers example. Purchased by Mr McKechney from the original owner in 1978 with sub 20,000 miles for his wife Margaret. She refused to drive the car due to poor rear visibility and it remained virtually unused but carefully garaged before selling the car to their son in 1991. He remained the custodian until 2015 meaning this prime VW was owned by the same family for 37 years! Enthusiast owned by three keepers since, one of which being classic car fanatic Mr Jamie Stephens, embarking on a meticulous and painstaking restoration investing 100’s of hours with invoices totalling thousands. Enjoying the show circuit with awards to prove the high standard and even having its own Instagam Page, (Click here: angus_the _beetle), this really is an exception to the normal offerings. Mr Stephens made the difficult decision to sell the car only to buy a lifelong dream classic, a Ford Escort Mk2 RS Mexico. Very cool, immaculate and wanting for nothing.

EXTERIOR
The astonishingly beautiful creation by Italian designer Carrozzeria Ghia and German coachbuilding house Karmann, the iconic Karmann Ghia was launched in 1955.  This 1966 example, finished in stunning Ruby Red, (Code L456), from factory Manila Yellow, is a multiple Concours d’Elegance winner having undergone a full body-off restoration in the mid 1990’s in the hands of air-cooled restoration experts, Bughaus of Nottingham.  Two boxes full of winning trophies hint towards just how special this car is, and physical inspection reveals just how stunning the paintwork, panel fit and overall finish is with just one miniscule ding to the nearside front wing.  All pristine chrome work has been subject to expensive professional refurbishment by Marque Restore.  All glass is factory fitment with number plate etching to each pane still present.  Meticulous attention to detail has been applied to every curve, line and feature of this car to include, trim, rubbers and the beautifully ornate Karmann Ghia badging.  In this case, a restoration costing far in excess of the cars value can only be undertaken for the true love of the car.

INTERIOR
The Black permeable leatherette upholstery has been recreated with no expense spared by leading interior expert Bernard Newbury, a name synonymous with quality and perfection within the world of VW upholstery.  The dash trim, which is unique to 1966 model year cars only, remains fitted to this example and as with the rest of the interior is in pristine order.  The styling attributes of this car seem endless and thankfully remain just as VW intended, even down to the fully operational VDO gauges and working clock to the ornate steering wheel with horn ring and Wolfsburg Crest which is slightly crazed with age.  Immaculate grey cord carpets are perfectly fitted and the perforated headlining is pristine.  A proven award-winning interior.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
An air-cooled 1600cc twin-port engine upgrade has been carried out to an exceptional standard both mechanically and aesthetically.  Lift the engine lid and it is easy to see why top marks for cleanliness have been awarded in the Concours d’Elegance categories.  No expense has been spared and there has been absolutely no compromise on the quality of parts fitted, as can been seen with the eye-wateringly huge collection of invoices in the history file.  The 4-speed gearbox performs exactly as intended and familiarisation is easy.

WHEELS, TYRES, BRAKES & SUSPENSION
Pristine black painted steel wheels retain the standard look with immaculate stainless-steel wheel covers and chrome hubcaps.  Tyres are matching quality brand Vredstein Sprint Classic 155 SR15 including the spare which is stored in the pristine luggage area alongside the original jack, wheel brace and tool roll.  Dual circuit braking system with drums all round offer steady straight-line braking.

HISTORY FILE
This desirable 1966 model year Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was manufactured on 17th January 1966 as a RHD car and delivered to the supplying dealer in Ramsgate, England on the 20th January 1966, as confirmed by the official Birth Certificate issued by Volkswagen Classic Parts in Wolfsburg, Deutschland.  First registration was on 21st March 1966.  Referred as a Type 1 Karmann Ghia and internally is the Type 14, this example has undergone and full body-off restoration in the mid 1990’s.  A huge full documentation file for the restoration has been kept as well as literally hundreds of photographs in an album to leave in no doubt just how meticulous the work undertaken has been.  Evidence of work and parts supply from the leading names within the classic VW scene are contained within the colossal history folders and photo albums, perusal of such would take hours, as would the polishing of two large boxes of winning trophies!  In 2005 well known club member, Mr Barry Sidwell, purchased the car, and to follow was entries to countless trophy earning competitions, and a file in the folder contains judging score sheets for various Concours d’Elegance, including well know Stanford Hall, Stoner Park, BVF, ABOC and many more.  The vehicle has been featured in many copies of quarterly magazine, The Historic VW, and was valued by Mason Hogg of the Karmann Ghia Centre in May 2016 at £24,000.

Amongst the finest Karmann Ghia’s in existence worldwide, this example excels in every respect.

Registered new on the 1st September 2003 by Main Dealer Lakeside Volkswagen of Stoke on Trent, the car was registered to them and subsequently sold one month later to the first and only private owner, Mr James Kelly. A sales invoice in the history file confirms the purchase price paid by Mr Kelly of £28,194.13 less a used car reduction of £4,199.13. Incredibly and despite the exceptionally low and fully verified 6,337 miles covered, there are 13 stamped entries across two service books, all of which are Volkswagen Main Dealers. EXTERIOR
This Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile is simply incredible with just 13,477 miles covered and displays a breath-taking originality only seldom found.  Type 2 vehicles built for a specific purpose, including Westfalia Campmobiles, have a ‘Sonderlackierung’, a special paint colour identified on the ‘M-Plate’ affixed behind the driver’s seat on the rear wall.  This example is finished in factory Pearl White, (Code 523907), and looks simply wonderful.  Only very minimal remedial paintwork has been carried out, by request of the fanatical owner and strictly done sympathetically in order to uphold this Camper’s extraordinary originality.  Light scratches around the fuel filler door and some tiny dings are visible but only upon close inspection.  Structurally perfect, never welded and with absolutely no rust, all panels display the correct linear faint ripples down each side in line with the original factory welds, leaving in no doubt the claim that this vehicle is unrestored.  All doors shut perfectly against the factory rubbers that have never been removed.  Beautifully preserved, a true one off.

INTERIOR
One for the collector, this full Westfalia factory conversion has remained almost completely unaltered from new.  The amazing originality of this vehicle even extends to the dealer optional mosquito net present and undamaged and factory wax applied to metal surfaces underneath trim.  All the fragile catches and rubber door stays have remained intact, as have the Birch plywood wall and ceiling panels and woodgrained and mar resistant furniture components, all factory original.  The table surfaces and interior trim are finished in factory fresh Oyster White and completes the hugely clever interior design of this classic Campmobile.  The Gold Vinyl rear seat upholstery and flooring are factory, and the leatherette trimmed front seats are immaculate with the ultra-rare and highly sought after versatile accessory seat trimmed in matching material.  The second long term keeper washed the original curtains causing them to disintegrate, however the previous owners resourceful wife managed to trace a near perfect pattern match and has had them professionally re-produced.  Time warp is a term used freely, but completely justified with this amazing vehicle.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The four-cylinder flat four air cooled engine with a capacity of 1584cc produces 57 bhp and is a mechanical delight.  Supreme cleanliness from an unrestored example will gain much awe from onlookers.  Reliable usage is a given due to fastidious maintenance using correct grade oils and genuine parts.  The fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox performs exactly as it should.  Nostalgically wonderful and correct in every way.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Factory 5” steel rims feature correct VW painted hubcaps often replaced in favour of chrome items.   Quality matching Dayton Quadra SE tyres of size P195/70 R14 are fitted all-round and amazingly the spare is still the original factory Continental item!  The dual hydraulic brake system incorporating dashboard warning light operate exactly as Volkswagen intended.

HISTORY FILE
Quite remarkably, this Campmobile has a history that can be traced all the way back to the factory!  Produced on the 27th April 1970 and fitted out by Westfalia, this example left the factory just six days later after it had been fully undersealed.  First destination was to the ferry port where it was shipped to a VW dealer in the US State of Pennsylvania and put on display.  A resident of Reading, Pennsylvania, by the name of Matthew Mongi saw the bus and decided to buy it as a retirement present.  In his 20 plus years of ownership, Mr Mongi used the bus for fishing trips and annual holidays, and it spent all other times in his garage when not in use.  In the early 1990’s and due to advancing years, Mr Mongi sold the vehicle to second owners, Les and Cherilee Keeper of New Jersey, at which point it had covered just 7,000 miles.  Mr and Mrs Keeper certainly took on the mantel of devoted ownership, using the bus for folk music festivals and garaged away from the elements when not in use.  It was in 2009 when the mileage was just 11,808 miles that dedicated VW collector, Mr Paul Willcock, travelled to the US to view the vehicle from his home in Reading, England coincidently!  Having regretted the sale of his previous bus, an eight year search ensued before Mr Willcock discovered this example, and both the journey and wait were more than worth it.  Having arrived in the UK in 2009 and fully registered with the DVLA, the bus has attended numerous high-profile Volkswagen meetings and shows where coveted awards have been won along with successful competing within the Stanford Hall Classic Concours D’Elegance.

A comprehensive box of vehicle history make for wonderful perusal and includes many fascinating photographs, original sales brochure, trophies gained and magazine features as well as all handbooks, Westfalia guide and even the very rare VW diagnostic coupon booklet!  Without question one of the best Type 2 example in existence and seldomly available to the open market.  Buy it while you can.
