Described by many as the ultimate hatchback this standard MK1 VW Golf GTi is finished in the classic factory Mars Red, (Code LA3A), and maintains a deep uniform shine. The body trim, rubbers, side decals, badges and light lenses are remarkably preserved and sharp. There is a small mark to the nearside front plastic wheel arch trim and bumper barely worthy of a mention. The factory glass has the registration number etched on it and the car still has the original dealer number plates and rear screen sticker. The iconic front grille with the red surround and GTi inscription is free from damage and the square and boxy hot hatch styling from the ’80s is unmissable. Being a non-sunroof model this is a desirable show stopper and a true icon delight.

The 1780cc engine produces 112bhp at 5800rpm enough to sprint to 60mph in 8.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 114mph. It really drives perfectly with a distinctive, addictive exhaust note. The engine bay is beautifully original and spotlessly clean with the delicate bulkhead plastic intact with no cracks, Danger sticker to the bonnet underside attached and VIN plate secure to the slam panel. The 5 speed sports gearbox is precise and a joy to use. This hot hatch is exactly how the manufacturer intended.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This superb Golf GTi is fitted with unmarked Tarantula alloy wheels with clear stampings visible and shod in premium Pirelli Cinturato P4 tyres measuring 175/70 R13 tyres all round with ample tread. Fitted with the large servo-assisted diagonally divided dual-circuit braking system with ventilated discs up front and drums at rear, they do an adequate job of stopping the car but fall short of modern braking systems.

Parts included to revert the car back to standard should the next owner wish consist of the standard exhaust system, braking components, rear light clusters, front indicators and side repeaters.

The car has formed part of one further incredible collection since and is now available to the next custodian to continue its remarkable preservation and enjoyment.

The order form and deposit receipts in the history file confirm the purchase price of £7,430 with delivery specified at 7:00am on the 1st August 1986, the day the all important new ‘D’ registration came out. The previous owner even managed to track down the salesman who sold the car to Mrs Waby who recalled there being a dealership employee BBQ on the night of the 31st July whereby at midnight the sales team left the showroom to deliver many new cars, including this example, to owners driveways in order that they would wake up to a brand new ‘D’ plate car! The car is registered with four owners however in fact the first two were Mrs Waby who mistakenly re-registered the car upon changing address. Used solely as a second weekend car and stored in a heated garage, Mrs Waby sold the car in 2014 after 28 years of ownership and there have been just two further owners. There is a neatly presented history file containing many VAG main dealer and specialist invoices as well as MOT certificates dating back to 1990 to further verify the low mileage. All handbooks, guides and point of sale literature remain in the dealership branded document wallet. Completing the history file is a workshop manual and a collection of period Scirocco sales brochures including a separate one for this Limited-Edition GTS model. A standard, low owner and low mileage Scirocco is a rare find indeed and the next fortunate keeper will benefit from 34 years of cherished ownership.

Purchased in retirement and used sparingly, the car was strictly garaged when not in use and in 1998 the car was registered to Mrs Patricia Armstrong upon her husband’s passing.

The history file is quite remarkable with the original service booklet containing 15 stamped entries (eight Volkswagen Main Dealer), incredible for such a low mileage car. Registered new on the 23rd May 2003 by Volkswagen Main Dealer, Corkills of Wigan, the car was purchased new by Robert Sharrock, who owned the vehicle for the next ten years. A sales invoice in the history file confirms the purchase price paid by Mr Sharrock of £24,420. Throughout his ownership Mr Sharrock had the car religiously serviced at Volkswagen Main Dealer, Gilbert Lawton of Macclesfield, with nine entries in the service book stamped by them. In 2013 the car was sold to the second and only other keeper, Thomas Threadgold, who has enjoyed the car for the last seven years as an occasionally fun car with minimal usage. A further three entries in the service booklet from independent specialists includes the most recent service carried out in June 2020 at which time the brake discs and pads all round were replaced.

A further huge and neatly filed folder contains corresponding Volkswagen service invoices and check sheets as well as MOT certificates dating back to the first in 2006. In 2009 the first owner Mr Sharrock treated himself to a Milltek rear silencer and coilovers all documented with invoices. The handbooks, manuals and guides and are included in the special leather R32 document wallet.
