Renault Sport Spider

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

One of 100 UK RHD Renault Sport Spiders with an incredible 2,528 miles.

MODEL HISTORY
Innovative aluminium construction, suspension and underpinnings of a pure race car, power from the hottest of hatchbacks, no side windows, no door handles and tiny production volumes totalling just 1,685 units are all features of a specialist car builder and not from one of Europe’s biggest mass producers.  That is the appeal of the Renault Sport Spider unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1995 and built at the Dieppe factory, home to the famous Alpine marque, between 1996 and 1999.  The UK market only imported the windscreen version rather than the aeroscreen and only 100 right hand drive cars were produced.  From the beginning a special one-car racing series for a purpose built Spider Trophy edition was designed.  This ran for several years as support to the British Touring Car Championship with famous drivers such as Jason Plato, who won 11 out of 14 races in the inaugural year of the UK Spider Cup.

EQUIPMENT
All aluminium spaceframe chassis, aluminium roll bar, vertically opening doors, body-coloured adjustable door mirrors, adjustable pedal positions, removable storage box in luggage compartment, laminated heated windscreen, single wide-sweep wiper, tonneau cover, elasticated door and passenger footwell storage nets, remote bonnet and engine cover levers in passenger door sill, engine immobiliser and coded key.  Accessories;  Colour coded rear spoiler, all-weather kit, Team Renault ELF Michelin clothing.

EXTERIOR
The arresting two-tone colour scheme finished in desirable metallic pearlescent Sports Yellow, (Code 535), looks incredible and can trace its heritage to the Laguna concept car in 1990.  The smooth pebble-like design is uncluttered and muscular with large air-gulping side scoops and attention grabbing ‘beetle-wing’ cantilever doors.  Having covered an amazing 2,528 miles, the original condition is virtually flawless and the desirable all-weather kit as new.  Close scrutiny will reveal nothing other than miniscule markings and a tiny scratch to the front clamshell on the offside.  The jacking point red triangular guide stickers are still attached and the heated front screen has the chassis etching and Renault service sticker.  An entirely hand built car and so rare.

INTERIOR
A definitively sparse and simplistic ‘back to basic’ feel with a modern, minimalist and uncluttered look.  Two fabulous Recaro race-style bucket seats offer the perfect degree of lumber and lateral support and are trimmed in waterproof PVC coated knitted fabric with the side parts finished in matt and the central panel featuring a flecked metallic motif in mottled grey, all in perfect condition.  Adjustment of the seats and the drilled aluminium pedals via a knob located beneath the dashboard ensures the perfect driving position.  Anodised aluminium of the dashboard crossbar and gear knob nicely offset the body-coloured interior panels and the aluminium chassis and cross member are left exposed with only tiny markings visible.  All instrumentation functions and looks stunning set in an aluminium-finish bezel contrasting with the futuristic dash top digital displays.  As with the rest of the interior, the silicon carbide-reinforced PVC floor covering has no wear and the original Renault Sport steering wheel displays natural veins found only on super low mileage examples.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The engine located transversely amidships is the tremendous 4-cylinder DOHC 150 bhp 16 valve 2.0 litre F7R Clio Williams engine with 0-60mph quoted at 7.05 seconds and a top speed of 134 mph.  Presented in factory standard guise with the optional performance exhaust and immaculate in appearance.  As with the engine, the 5-speed gearbox is mounted transversely and features effective pendulum suspension to prevent vibrations being transmitted through the chassis.  Quick, direct and perfectly reactive to the responsive engine.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Lightweight five-spoke alloy wheels with plated bolts are shod in the original premium 205/50 R16 Michelin Pilot SX tyres with masses of tread.  Big 300mm ventilated disc brakes all-round taken from the larger and heavier 166 mph A610 Turbo rein in the exuberant performance of this super-lightweight Spider.

HISTORY FILE
This UK RHD Renault Sport Spider is one of just 100 examples made and was supplied by Renault Main Dealers, S.R.Baber of Tonypandy, Wales.  With just three former keepers, long term owners from 2000 to 2016 were husband and wife, Mr and Mrs Jackson.  Mr Jackson purchased the Spider in 2000 at just two years old whereby upon his passing, the car was registered in his wife’s name, Mrs Linda Jackson-Hookins.  In 2016, the car was purchased by Renault Spider collector, Mr Nigel Turner, who has owned several examples and whose enthusiasm and knowledge of the model is vast.  He even commissioned a flocked hardback book featuring this actual car!
Every conceivable brochure produced for the Sport Spider, hardback books, original Renault Press Pack and Press Launch literature has been collected in the history file including one for the rare Laguna Project headed by Patrick Le Quement.  The vehicle handbooks and service book are housed in the factory supplied aluminium briefcase often held back as a souvenir and two sets of Renault keys are supplied.  Unrivalled pleasure and a significant part of automotive history.  A collection of Renault Main Dealer and specialist invoices and receipts are held in the history file including a documented Cambelt change in 2016 at 2,516 miles.  A true collectors piece.

Renault Alpine A610 Turbo

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

One of only 67 UK RHD Renault Alpine A610 Turbos with just 2,901 miles.

MODEL HISTORY
Jean Rédélé was the youngest Renault Dealer in France and launched his first car in 1954, naming it after the classic French road trial.  The A106 had early success in the Mille Miglia Road Race and was the beginning of a fruitful mutual partnership between Alpine and Renault.  With continual rally success by 1968 Alpine had been allocated the whole Renault competition budget and opened a new assembly plant in Dieppe.  Iconic cars including the A108, A110, A310 and GTA/A610 were hand built there but thanks to high assembly costs and low demand, (due to the cost when new), only 818 A610 Turbos were made when production ceased in 1995 of which 67 were RHD.  The Alpine factory remained open building cars such as the Clio Williams and RenaultSport Spiders and in 2017 the Alpine marque was relaunched with an all-new A110.

EQUIPMENT
Impact-resistant reinforced lightweight composite body, integrated side skirts, front and rear spoilers, aerodynamic flat underbody, pop-up halogen headlights, twin exhausts, 6-speaker stereo system, air conditioning, power steering, one-touch electric windows, turbo pressure gauge, multi-function trip computer, dash rheostat, electric heated door mirrors, folding rear 2+2 seats, leather-bound sports steering wheel.

EXTERIOR
The uncluttered lines and painstakingly designed details of the Alpine A610 combined with carefully-honed aerodynamics result in a stunning supercar appearance.  Finished in immaculate Rouge Vernis, (Code 075), the glossy shine is perfectly uniform and all decals and badges are present. Some paint to the integrated side skirts and a wing mirror to uphold the immaculate appearance has been carried out.  All glass, rubbers and wheel apertures are as new.  Having been owned by Renault Retail Group this car has enjoyed a pampered showroom life and is incredible.

INTERIOR
The ergonomically-designed ‘Petale’ sports seats finished in optional Grey leather are immaculate and along with the rest of the interior, commensurate with the amazingly low 2,901 miles covered.  All dials, gauges and electronic displays function perfectly including the heater fan on all speed settings. The leather-bound sports steering wheel with the Alpine Blue logo in the centre has no wear.  A common issue with this model and its predecessor, the GTA, is the headlining.  This example has had the headlining replaced to exact manufacturer standards.  Under bonnet and engine compartment is as new with all stickers, plates and labels still attached.  A very exclusive and rare environment.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
A light alloy 2975cc V6 engine equipped with an electronically controlled Garrett T3 turbocharger produces 250 bhp which is enough to propel this Supercar to a top speed of 165.6 mph and 0-62 in 5.7 secs.  Ownership by the Renault Retail Group and a recent service by a Renault Main Dealer in October 2017 will help ensure reliability.  The 5-speed aluminium alloy gearbox performs faultlessly.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Fitted with immaculate and optional 16in Spider alloy wheels shod in new Continental Sportcontact2 tyres all-round of 205/45 R16 front and 245/45 R16 rear dimensions.  The original Michelin MXX tyres as fitted from new are also supplied.  Front and rear ventilated discs with Bosch 5-sensor ABS brakes stop this supercar quickly and safely.

HISTORY FILE
A fascinating and privileged history.  This example is chassis number 85049 and is the earliest Alpine A610 on the Renault Alpine A610 Register.  It is reputedly the very first RHD example made and was snapped up when new by a wealthy international collector.  Offered back to Renault in 2001 it was purchased by the Renault Retail Group U.K under the supervision of Stuart Walker, a long time Alpine-Renault fan who enjoyed various roles during his 32 year career with Renault including the Managing Director, Renault Retail Group U.K.  Club Alpine Renault would often arrange an Alpine-Renault day at the Renault Dealership in Cannock where this car featured centre stage and reputedly could have been sold many times over!  The window display notices and POS are included in the history file from when the car was on display at Renault.  Since leaving Renault UK in June 2015 the car has been owned by two collectors including Mr Rory Johnstone, owner of Classic Throttle Shop, Australasia’s largest classic car showroom in Sydney’s Lower North Shore.

Previous MOT certificates, spare keys and even period accessories such as a rare Alpine Renault mug, Renault Winter Pack and genuine Alpine leather key fobs are included.  The car has had a recent service by a Renault Main Dealer in October 2017 and is ready for the next lucky custodian.

European Car of the Year in 1982, this example has covered just 8,884 miles from new having been won in a Renault ‘Fit the Piece’ National Draw in 1982! Preserved in long term storage, the structural condition is superb and whilst presentable there is evidence of less than perfect paintwork rectification and amateur touch ups, carried out due to sun damage where the car lived for many years. All trim pieces are intact and well preserved with only light aging to the rear spoiler noteworthy. This high specification TLE model is sure to delight fans of the diamond badged French manufacturer!

INTERIOR
The interior of this well specified TLE model is in excellent condition. The velour upholstery in Sand colour scheme is immensely comfortable, a classic characteristic of Renault and unworn owing to the ultra-low mileage. Natural veins to the unworn steering wheel and gear knob are prominent and the typically fragile Renault plastics have avoided the usual damage associated with regular use. A traditional 1980’s Renault lounge interior.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Dealership optional alloys wheels from the Renault Boutique range were specified as an upgrade along with mud flaps. The intricate design to the attractive wheels has been very well protected and all four tyres are matching 175/70 R13 with plenty of tread remaining. Hydraulic twin circuit brakes incorporate servo assistance, discs up front and rear drums to offer adequate stopping power.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on the 20th October 1982, this example was won as a brand new car by the first owner through the ‘Fit the Piece’ National Draw and was presented by Renault National Promotions Manager Peter Widdecombe at the Renault UK Leeds Branch. The ingenious competition involved sending a key to customers to then visit their local Renault dealership, and if the key fitted a car they became winners of it! The first owner, although no doubt delighted with their good fortune did not require the car and it was laid up for many years. In 2010 Renault Classic Car Club member, John Bradshaw, knew of the vehicle and tracked it down knowing it to be arguably the lowest mileage example in the country. He purchased the car adding it to an extensive collection but not finding the time to put it on the road. Fellow club member and Club Registrar, Richard Newton Birchenough, purchased the car next and sourced obscure trim pieces and fully recommissioned it. Joining no less than four Renault 18s including a very rare TL estate the difficult decision was made and the car was sold to concentrate on the 18s. The history file contains the original Renault plastic wallet with handbooks, guides and pamphlets as well as club literature, an original sourced sales brochure and workshop manual. This rare surviving Renault 9, seldom seen on UK roads, will suit any Renault enthusiast or collector of quirky classics.
