Early photos of the car exist along with a comprehensive collection of restoration photos revealing the works undertaken to restore this iconic Ford legend. The previous owner, Mr Erratt, of 14 years invested much time, dedication and money witnessed by the numerous invoices and KGF Classic Cars were honoured to be contacted by the family upon Mr Errat’s untimely passing to find a caring owner. Ford Cortina MK4 1600L

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

A nostalgic Ford Cortina Mk4 1600L with 40,249 miles in amazing show condition.

EQUIPMENT
All steel welded integral construction, safety glass all round, Zone-Toughened windscreen, louvered radiator grill, bodyside coachline, bright drip-rail, windshield and rear window inserts, anti-burst locks, bright bumpers, perforated headlining, lockable glovebox, ‘hangdown’ centre console, vanity mirror, seat valances, cigar lighter, boot mat, two rear coat hooks, instrument illumination control, two speed wipers with ‘flick’ wipe, electric screen wash.

EXTERIOR
This beautiful Mk4 1600L is finished in the original colour of Fjord Blue, (Code Q9). Having acquired this Cortina in 2017, KGF Classic Cars were delighted to see that the car still wore its factory fitted panels which were unrepaired and incredibly well preserved. Linear shut lines and defined panel edges affirmed the amazing originality, and first paint had been retained. The decision was made to commission an expensive professional glass out repaint, returning the car to its former glory. Meticulous removal and either replacement or refurbishment of trim sections was a real labour of love, and the remit quickly became clear, to make this Cortina exceptional regardless of time. The preservation of some original aged trim pieces took preference over aftermarket replacements, and with this in mind some very minor markings can be seen upon close scrutiny. All factory glass and lights are number plate etched, with exception of the front screen which was replaced due to a stone chip. A new lease of life for this already remarkable Cortina, ready now for many more years of cherishment.

INTERIOR
Having covered just 40,249 miles from new, the original interior has been well preserved. The factory coverings to the Black Fabric seats, (Code A1), are clean and show only minimal wear. Three tiny nicks to the fabric along to rear seat top can be seen. The colour keyed carpets, matching door cards and perforated headlining are in good condition. All switchgear and functions are in excellent order and housed in a perfect dashboard with no cracks or sun related distortion. A wonderfully original classic Ford interior, comfortable and hugely nostalgic.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Ford’s time tested and trustworthy 1600 OHC unit with single choke carburettor needs little introduction. With a power output of 72bhp, a top speed of 94mph and a 0-60 time of 13 seconds is quoted. Bonnet up exhibiting is a must with factory plates displayed along with beautifully detailed components and original panel fitment. The four speed all synchromesh manual gearbox feels light with a positive clutch action and relaxed motoring is effortless.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original styled steel wheels with 13 x 4.5in rims are in immaculate order and shod in matching 165/80 R13 tyres with plenty of tread remaining. The spare wheel is housed alongside the original jack in a spotless boot area, still protected by the boot mat and totally original with factory weld seams still visible. Hydraulic dual line brakes with servo assistance and 9.75in front discs offer ample stopping power and complete assurance.

HISTORY FILE
First registered on 1st August 1979, this rare surviving Ford Cortina has covered a very low and verified 40,249 miles from new. Previous MOT certificates dating back to 1983 and a large collection of invoices date from 1980 to 2017 track the mileage and form part of the comprehensive history file. Perusal of which leaves in no doubt the fastidious maintenance this car has enjoyed which is testament for the superb mechanical performance. Recent work carried out in 2016 includes a major service and new carburettor. The previous keeper, Mr Holmes, a member of the Ford Cortina Owners Club and huge classic car enthusiast sold the Cortina to KGF Classic Cars early in 2017 after purchasing our Rover Montego 1.6LX. Mr Holmes even kept a maintenance log for the car! All original handbooks, operating guides and the Ford Accessories booklet remain with the car. KGF Classic Cars quickly learned of the amazing originality of this Cortina with only the factory first paint showing cosmetic aging. The car was handed to renowned and trusted Classic Cars Restorer, Andrew Skervin, to carry out the full glass out repaint, the results of which are a credit to both him and the car. A truly stunning classic Ford.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Spoke-style deep dish 5.5 x 13in Mexico steel wheels which have the same centre design as the original factory fitted wheels are shod in quality Yokohama A539 185/60 R13 tyres.  Capri 2.8 vented front discs with EBC Greenstuff front pads and drums up rear require a firm application.

HISTORY FILE
This Ford Escort 1300E was built in April 1974 and registered by Ford Main Dealers, Gilberts Garage in Crowborough Sussex on the 2nd May 1974. The new vehicle invoice reveals the first owner, Mrs Wilmshurst, paid a grand total of £1550.11 including £3.53 for 7 gallons of Prem!  The original stamped service book highlights the car returning to the same Main Dealer until 1984.  A newspaper advert submitted on the 6th February 1987 by Bridge Garage reveals the car for sale for £1,299 and was subsequently sold to the third owner, Mr A.R Brooker, on the 11th February 1987 for £1,299.  At this time the car had covered 36,703 miles.  Mr Booker joined the Ford Escort 1300E Owners Club and was an avid blue oval enthusiast.  The current keeper since February 2005, Mr Charles Evans, has created a fabulous Jekyl and Hyde machine with factory original looks but with a fast & furious modern twist!  Historic invoices with previous old MOT certificates help track the 57,196 miles covered and countless newer invoices will convince the next lucky custodian how very special this oldskool retro Ford is.

EQUIPMENT
Louvred design radiator grille with aerofoil section, aerodynamic front and rear black spoilers, black wheelarch extensions, twin body coloured doors mirrors, special XR2 bodyside decal treatments, extended black window surround paint, storage compartment under rear-floor, laminated windscreen, Ford P21 push button stereo, two speed plus intermittent wipe, tailgate wash/wipe, heated rear window, tachometer, trip recorder, driving lamps, soft feel special steering wheel, perforated ‘Cool Black’ headlining, digital header mounted clock, loadspace carpet, cigar lighter, illuminated interior controls. Dealer options: Ziebart rust proofing treatment, Ford rubber floor mats.

EXTERIOR
This unrepeatable sporting Fiesta XR2 boasts truly amazing credentials and is finished in striking Sunburst Red, (Code P1). The factory paintwork is bright, uniform and displays a fantastic unmolested finish, impossible to recreate and lost on first paint.  All factory fitted panels are straight with linear gaps.  There are various light markings such as touched in stone chips to the bonnet and tiny dings left strictly untouched so as to uphold originality.  The conscientious owner, upon ordering the car in 1983, paid an extra £109 for Ziebart rust proofing treatment, from which the original Ziebart hole plugs are visible along with the rear window sticker.  The door edges have been protected by plastic strips still attached.  All other decals are original Ford fitment and have remained in exceptional preserved condition, as have all further trim sections and badges.  The correct Ford Hella rear lenses and spot lamps, and the Lucus H4 headlamps remain fitted, along with original supplying Ford dealer number plates, rear screen sticker and tax disc holder.  An iconic sporting Ford left exactly as intended, truly special.

INTERIOR
The interior in this remarkable example remains in beautiful untouched condition, even down to the working Ford P21 push button stereo and original Ford rubber floor mats.  The ‘Storm’ and Crushed Velour interior in Shark Grey, (Code KW), is immaculate.  The Shark Grey loop pile carpet is spotless as are the Grey Mylar sidewall and rear quarter finishers.  The red laser line around the instrument binnacle is vibrant and the soft finish dashboard is perfect.  The unworn steering wheel and gear knob have prominent veins.  The devoted owner even kept the sunvisor hung cold and hot starting instructions still attached!  All switchgear is functional and the original trimmed parcel shelf is straight and complete with the correct rubber hangers.  Paranoid of being shunted in the rear by another car, the owner installed high level brake lights in 1990 and these are easily removed if desired.   A delightfully period unspoilt interior, reminiscent of the 1980’s hot hatch phenomenon.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The time proven transverse mounted 1600 OHV engine with Weber twin-venturi carburettor develops an ample 84BHP, which in such a lightweight and nimble car achieves a top speed of 105mph and 0-60 in just 9.3 seconds.  As part of the Ziebart rust proofing the engine compartment has been treated.  The four speed synchromesh gearbox with remote shift is light and exact.  A real ‘smile on your face’ experience.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Special ‘pepperpot’ 13” X 6” alloy wheels, as with the rest of the car, have never been refurbished and display prominent Ford emblems and manufacture raised markings.  A few light markings are visible.  The spare alloy wheel still wrapped in the original Pirelli P6 rubber sits in the boot wheel housing which incorporates the correct ‘bulged’ rear lower valance designed to accommodate the enlarged alloy wheel compared with lower Fiesta models.  The dual line servo assisted brakes with ventilated 9.4” front discs and 7.0” rear drums bring the car up to a steady, straight and assured halt.

HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 10th January 1983 by Ford Main Dealer, Polar Motors of Bradford, this exceptionally special example has covered just 26,514 miles with one owner from new.  Both blue and red V5 documents list zero former keepers.  A new car sales invoice made out to Mr Phillip Bramhall confirms the purchase price of £5,485.70 less £1,050 for a Mini 1275 taken in part exchange.  The Ziebart guarantee certificate dated 7th January 1983, three days prior to registration, has also been kept.  The owner’s handbook is present and the original service booklet contains seven stamped entries covering the early years up to the mileage of 15,500.  Previous MOT certificates dating as far back as 1987 and a collection of invoices fully verify the low mileage.  Two main Ford keys operate the ignition and all locks and both original petrol cap keys are present.  Supplying Dealer key fobs are included.
The decision to leave this example in its preserved state and as the day it was driven away from Polar Motors or remove the Ziebart treatment and carry out minor body repairs to make concours is not a decision KGF Classic Cars feels privileged to make.  We would rather let the second owner decide, at no cost, in the knowledge that KGF Classic Cars will gladly carry out the necessary works.
