The last visit was in March 2020 for a full service, cam-belt and water pump. The vehicle has only been registered to a retired Mr Anthony Lee who paid £19,995 as documented by the new vehicle invoice. Personally handed over by the garage owner, Max Harper-Allen who asked Mr Lee to give him first refusal if ever he sold the car due to its limited numbers and knowing Mr Lee was fanatical about his Fords! True to his word, Mr Lee sold the car back to the garage in 2016 where it has remained in Mr Allen’s care and in his private Ford collection. Working in the industry with trade insurance, Mr Allen has never registered the car in his name so it remains, one registered keeper on the registration document. A letter in the history file confirms this ownership.

All original handbooks, guides and special RS supplement are contained within the Ford leather RS wallet. Two keys with RS fobs are present. This car is not only amazing in its condition but in its history too making this what must be, one of the finest Mk1 Focus RS examples currently available.

HISTORY FILE
Assembled at the Ford Saarlouis Plant, Germany in April 1985 and registered new on the 16th August 1985 on a ‘C’ plate prefix, this very late MK3 XR3i was supplied new by Ford Main Dealers Bristol Street Motors Limited of Birmingham. Previous long term owner, Mr Phillip Woods who in fact has owned the car twice, was a regular attendee on the Ford Fair Concours and show scene in the mid to late 1990’s and the car won many awards. Entered bi-annually in the Ford XR Owners Club National Days in 1996,1997,1998 and 1999, the car won in the Standard Factory Class on all eight occasions with trophies still with the car! The car was always trailered to shows but secretly driven off close to the venue resulting in less preparation time before the show! It was kept in a heated garage at all other times. In 2001, Mr Woods made the decision to sell, something he soon became to regret, but as luck would have it, he spotted a classified advert with it for sale in Edinburgh in 2004 whereby he promptly took a flight from Staffordshire and drove the car home!

A neatly presented history folder contains a huge file of receipts and Ford main dealer invoices as well as previous MOT certificates dating back to the very first in 1988. There are two sets of original keys and one key fits all locks. Sold by KGF Classic Cars to Mark Bailey, creator of the famous Bonkers Collection in January 2020 only to be part-exchanged against our 17,000 mile Series One RS Turbo. This outstanding XR3i will appeal to a serious collector or enthusiast wanting a fabulous proven example of an iconic and fast appreciating icon that has played a huge part in the history of Fast Fords.

Mk1 Ford Escort Twin Cam

SORRY NOW SOLD – SIMILAR WANTED

An AVO Club Registered and National Day winning Mk1 Ford Escort Twin Cam

MODEL HISTORY
Prior to the Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) Plant at Aveley being opened, all Twin Cam Escorts were constructed at Fords Halewood Factory. On the same assembly lines as other Escorts, through body assembly, paint and trim areas until the point mechanical components were added and make the vital body strengthening changes. At this stage they would be taken off the line into a separate small workshop where a dozen specially chosen workers were ready to slot in the unique components. Roger Clark took a ‘works’ Twin-Cam, registered XOO262F to its first international rally in April 1968 and Group 2 homologation was achieved on the 1st May 1968 when Ford convinced the authorities that 1000 cars had been made. By the middle of the year Twin-Cams were winning in rallies and on the race track. Queues built up and order books lengthened and most cars once delivered were usually rushed into a workshop, stripped and modified for a particular purpose. A total of just 1,263 Twin Cams were produced at Halewood and approximately 60 Twin Cams are registered with the AVO Club as of Jan 2020. (Source: Mark Heath AVO Twin Cam Registrar).

The rear bumper is a genuine Ford item but incorrect for the year and the chrome roof drip rails are not fitted. A small engine fire is well documented after the car failed to attend AVO Day in 2013 and photographs show the minor damage. The owner decided at this point to embark on a full engine rebuild and body restoration with invoices and photos to prove. It has continued to attend the show circuit with proven success since.

INTERIOR
A basic and tasteful interior correct to factory specification with the fully-tilting GT type fixed back seats finished in Black PVC in remarkable condition. Impeccable annual maintenance since it has been dyno tested and produces 130.6bhp. Front discs and larger rear drums as fitted to the Capri 3.0 and later AVO Escorts are pressurised by a Girling Powerstop remote servo recently overhauled in January 2020.

HISTORY FILE
Built at the Halewood factory in October 1970 this Twin Cam has been long registered with the Ford AVO Club and certified as a rare surviving example still with its original Type 49 bodyshell. First registered on the 9th March 1971 it has only had five former keepers. The last two keepers being Steve Smith in 2008, the then AVO Club Secretary followed by Graham Chadband in 2011 the Clubs PR & Events Organiser. Both individuals are incredibly experienced Twin Cam gurus and their lengthy ownership should help reassure the next custodian. Mr Chadband is fastidious with annual invoices for upkeep and a no expense spared mentality in making sure this example is on the button and can be driven anywhere. It recently enjoyed an outing to The Goodwood Revival Meeting in September 2019. The vehicle is well known on the show circuit winning Best Twin Cam in 2011 and 2017 and third in class in 2019, all at the prestigious Ford AVO Owners Club National Days. The engine bay is beautifully clean but not all fixtures are production line correct. The chassis number is just visible on the suspension reinforced plate. The factory 4-speed synchromesh gearbox as fitted to the Twin Cam and RS1600 works perfectly.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Being an early production car it is fitted with the Mk2 Lotus Cortina/Twin Cam 5.5x13in pressed steel wheels in silver with plain stainless steel hubcaps all bright and straight. Premium Goodyear Grand Prix S tyres measuring 165 SR13 are period looking with ample tread. A standard factory braking system compromising of a Girling Powerstop remote brake servo is fitted at the nearside front of the engine bay resulting in the battery being located in the boot. Front discs and larger rear drums as fitted to the Capri 3.0 do a fine job of stopping this car.

HISTORY FILE
Built at Fords Advanced Vehicle Operations factory in Aveley in July 1971 this vehicle was registered on the 3rd August 1971 and has only had four former keepers from new. A very rare early car finished in one of three launch colours, Sunset Red, and incredibly still a matching numbers example with its factory supplied engine. Sourced by the AVO Owners Club model Registrar and Club Valuer in 2013 for the current Ford RS collector. Personally inspected by Glyn Morgan on the 10th March 2012 who writes that he is ‘completely satisfied that the car is a genuine 1971 Escort Mexico’. The difficult decision to sell this prime example was only taken to make room for a new addition, a low mileage Mk2 Ford Escort RS2000, identical to what the owner had when new! A collection of invoices, MOT certificates and old literature makes fascinating reading along with copies of HAVOC, the AVO Owners Club quarterly magazine for members. Spare keys are included. A very rare car for the avid collector and blue oval enthusiast.
